This year, Pantone’s color of the year is more than just a fashion statement. For the first time ever, the company symbolically has selected a “blending” of two shades to represent cultural shifts taking place in the world.
According to the corporation’s website, Rose Quartz (“a persuasive yet gentle tone”) and Serenity (a “weightless and airy” shade) together create “a soothing feeling of order and peace,” which serves as an “antidote to modern day stresses.”

But beyond their relaxing effects, the two typical nursery shades also reflect the evolving culture surrounding the fluidity of gender. “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design,” reads the company’s site. “This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”
Side by side, this year’s colors also bring to mind Romy and Michele’s infamous minidresses. Guess the ladies were just 20 years ahead of their time.
