While the talk of the runway in Paris this fall fashion week should be the great new prints at Dries van Noten and the Klimt-inspired looks that Marco Zanini did for Rochas, the fashion flock is all abuzz about the BIG BIG changes happening at some of the largest Parisian fashion houses.
Hedi Slimane, the French designer who made men look much much skinnier with his wildly slim cut suits for Dior Homme, has been named the new designer of YSL – which means YSL’s Stefano Pilatti is officially out. Slimane has many female fans – Cate Blanchett often wore his mens’ suits, and if he can make womens’ clothes look as sexy as he did mens’, he’ll have many, many female fans in Hollywood, Blanchett probably the first among them.

It’s the perfect house for Slimane to create womens’ clothes in – he does architectural slouch, as we like to call it – and YSL has that Parisian architectural slouch vibe. For the past few years, Slimane has been living in Los Angeles and carving out a very good career as a photographer, both in fashion and in art. Sounds like he will wind up shooting his own ad campaigns, like Karl Lagerfeld does for Chanel.

Meanwhile, after the great Raf Simons stepped down at Jil Sander this week, it seemed a total go that he would be named the next designer to helm Christian Dior this week – a year after John Galliano stepped down. Now, it’s been reported over time that Marc Jacobs, Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy and others have turned down the Dior job – as these exhalted designers are all quite happy where they are, where they have wonderful artistic freedom as well as monetary success. Simmons seemed a great aesthetic choice – but at this late date, fashion spies in Paris say that Haider Ackermann – who often dresses muses Tilda Swinton and Janet Jackson – and who was considered a shoo-in to be the next designer at Chanel – will be the man stepping up to the Dior plate very soon. Flowers were seen being delivered to his Paris aterlier from LVMH, which owns Dior.
As the fashion houses turn – stay tuned!
