AP ImagesL.A.-based designer Hedi Slimane has made no secret of his rapture for the city’s ’70s rock ‘n’ roll style, and this season he toned down the literal interpretation and glammed up the look. There were, thankfully, no ponchos this time around — instead models showed off star-spangled capes and striped blazers.
On Sept. 29, with a musician-packed front row — members of Daft Punk and Phoenix were in the crowd, alongside Pete Doherty and Lenny Kravitz — Slimane once again pleased the champagne-swilling crowd that bopped along to the breathy Un, Deux, Trois by French electro-pop disco singer Aleide.
Lou Doillon, who regularly wears the designer on the red carpet, fessed up to her Saint Laurent addiction. “Clearly I’m a sucker for his work. I actually try to fool myself; I go in random stores and point and something and say, ‘How about that?’ and it’s Saint Laurent. For f—’s sake! It’s always Saint Laurent. I’m hooked whether I want to be or not.”
Salma Hayek, who sat with husband, Kering CEO and Saint Laurent owner Francois-Henri Pinault, has seen the collection evolve since Slimane’s first show two years ago. “He keeps the same DNA but it’s always something new. The shoes are so much different than last time — I’m so happy because they are so much taller!” said the 5-foot-2 actress, vowing to wear the sky-high platforms on the red carpet. “And they even look comfortable.”
Still the petite actress was caught in the middle of a paparazzi scrum: “You’re going to make me cry, I’m almost blind now,” she said, causing Kravitz to act as temporary bodyguard. “I got your back,” he told her.
Canadian wunderkind director Xavier Dolan took a break from the continuing press tour of his Cannes Jury Prize winner Mommy to see the show.
“I’m not used to talking about fashion, and I don’t have my glasses,” admitted the director, who also does all the costumes for his films. “But I was completely struck by this short, flash green coat, but it seemed like a long Yves Saint Laurent coat that Catherine Deneuve wore. I thought when I saw the model walk down the catwalk, ‘It’s truly the new generation,’ ” he said.
For her part, the doyenne herself was seated in the front row and told Pret-a-Reporter: “He’s so talented and so clever, he’s the only one who can do what he does.”
