PARIS — Guests at the Saint Laurent show on Sunday entered the Grand Palais in almost total darkness, but as soon as the lights went up (and up and up as part of an industrial installation that added a dose of drama to the show) they revealed the most star-studded front row of the spring/summer 2014 collections.
Milla Jovovich, Sky Ferreira, Michael Pitt and Beck flanked American Vogue editor Anna Wintour, while Salma Hayek and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, bounced along to “Fire Doesn’t Burn Itself” by Bay Area singer Sam Flax. French actor Pierre Niney, who is set to play Yves Saint Laurent in one of two upcoming biopics, sat with the film’s director Jalil Lespert and the late Saint Laurent’s partner, Pierre Berge.
L.A.-based designer Hedi Slimane showed a David Bowie-meets-rockabilly-inspired collection with jeans so skinny that models struggled to even fit their hands in their pockets as they strutted down the runway. All the androgyny — including bright red lipstick on some models — led Ferreira to tell The Hollywood Reporter: “It made me wish I was a man!”
“I want to wear all of it. I’m definitely getting some of the pieces,” said the “Red Lips” singer, who appeared in an ad campaign for the brand earlier this year. She declared it her favorite, both for Slimane’s designs and more personal reasons. “It was the best show of the week, and the best thing he’s done so far at Saint Laurent — plus my boyfriend was in it,” she said of model Zachary Cole Smith.
Jovovich also seemed to have plans to pinch some of the sequined blazers, leather pants and leopard print bolero jackets from the guys.
“We would look great in those clothes,” she said, gesturing to another model pal, as they waited to go backstage after the show. Though the show started an on-time-for-fashion 22 minutes late and the line to get backstage was equally long, Jovovich loved the show so much that she didn’t mind. “I would have waited three hours for it.”
We’ll keep a lookout for the Expendables 3 star to don some super-skinny Saint Laurents on a red carpet soon.
