Stephanie ChanAmong the many pretty dresses to hit the red carpets recently, one breakout is Self-Portrait — the contemporary women’s label founded in 2013 by London-based designer Han Chong.
Kerry Washington, Kate Bosworth, Zendaya, Ellie Goulding and Beyonce (the list goes on) are among the A-listers who have been spotted in one of Chong’s feminine pieces. Lucy Hale most recently wore the brand at the People’s Choice Awards (which landed her on our best-dressed list from the show).
While his designs have had major red-carpet moments this past year, Chong tells Pret-a-Reporter that it’s “still quite new” for him to witness Hollywood’s biggest names in a brand that has only been launched for a little over two years.
“It’s pretty amazing for a young brand like Self-Portrait to have those supporters because we don’t have a lot of budget or advertisements, so the celebrities have really helped,” says the Malaysia native of how stars have helped his one-of-a-kind yet accessible clothes (prices range from about $300 to $600) gain recognition.
Of the many famous folks who have worn his identifiable, intricate lace dresses, Chong says he especially loved seeing Rachel McAdams and Kristen Stewart in them. He adds with a laugh, “[I] pinch myself. Is this real?”

Hollywood’s biggest names should have no problem finding more pretty pieces from his fall 2016 collection, as Chong presented a number of his signature intricately-cut lace tops, dresses and skirts in colors that were inspired by Irish-born figurative painter Francis Baker (think lilac, dark green, black and light and cobalt blue) on Saturday in Soho.
He also produced outerwear, including a lace embroidered khaki parka and bomber jacket (“This is the first time I’m doing this,” he says) and tops with extra-long sleeves that nearly covered the models’ entire hands.
