Priyanka Chopra’s sleek, low-slung ponytail was one of the standout beauty moments on the Emmys red carpet Sunday, but it almost never happened.
The vision for the hair to go with Chopra’s red custom Jason Wu dress was “something sleek and non-fussy, nothing too crazy, and pulled back,” says her longtime hairstylist, Castillo, who consulted with the designer and his team before crafting the look.
But what started out as an up-do quickly evolved into a ponytail the morning of the show, when Castillo opted for an equally sophisticated ‘do that would play up the Grecian twisting in the former Miss World and Quantico star’s gown. “I decided to incorporate that in the side part,” he explains.

The look starts with a good blow-dry, says Castillo. “If you have a flat paddle brush, blow-dry from root to end and when you start to prepare your ponytail, use product from the roots all the way down to the mid-shaft,” notes the stylist, who prepped Chopra’s hair with MOP’s Pear Detangler before layering in MOP Mixed Greens Leave-In Conditioner to combat dryness, followed by a spritz of root-boosting MOP Lemongrass Lift.

After Chopra’s hair was dried, Castillo straightened it from mid-shaft to ends using a ghd Platinum Styler working in sections from the neck to the front of the head, then applied MOP’s orange peel molding cream. Twisting the hair behind the actress’ ear and down the back of her neck, Castillo gathered the rest of Chopra’s hair into a low-slung pony at the nape of her neck with a bungee, wrapped in a section of hair.
The look was ideal for the day’s sweltering heat, too. “When it’s hot, there’s always that one hair just doing its own thing, there’s always one curl just going to town,” joked Castillo. “This non-fussy style was the way to go.”
