A walking Gucci billboard that answers to the name Salma Hayek treated Gucci fans to a first look at Dapper Dan’s collaboration with the Italian fashion house at last night’s Vanity Fair Oscars party. Not surprisingly, the custom ensemble lived up to our over-the-top expectations (and then some), but, to be honest, we’re most impressed with Dapper Dan’s branding.
Like Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, Dapper Dan is not one for subtlety. The Harlem-based designer created a custom two-piece ensemble — a pink and gold lurex “GG” jacket and ball gown skirt — featuring crystal-embellished trim and his literal calling card, “DAPPER DAN” embroidered in crystals on the back.
At the actual Oscars ceremony, Hayek wore another Gucci look, a heavily embellished lavender gown that could have passed as an I, Tonya figure skating costume in another setting. The actress’ alliance to the fashion house is not unexpected considering she’s married to Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO of Gucci parent company Kering.
Dapper Dan first teamed up with the fashion house last year after Michele recreated one of his infamous designs (a voluminous, heavily logoed jacket that Dapper Dan whipped up for Olympian Diane Dixon back in the ‘80s) for the Gucci cruise 2018 collection. Since then, Dapper Dan starred in a campaign for the Italian house, and in January of this year he re-opened his Harlem atelier with Gucci’s support. The boutique is open by appointment only for bespoke creations, however a Dapper Dan x Gucci capsule is expected to drop later this year with the fall 2018 collection.
If Hayek’s look is any indication of what’s to come, it might be wise to bring sunglasses to the reveal.
