Without the usual suspects on hand to go nearly nude — Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Rihanna — the red carpet for Monday night’s Grammy Awards looked a bit more conservative than in past years. (Ciara was the exception.) Thankfully, a slew of stars turned to the cutout trend to show a little strategic skin.
Bella Hadid had a slight Morticia Addams vibe in her black sequined Alexandre Vauthier gown, with long sleeves and graceful diagonal cutouts on either side of her waist. Of course, the model and girlfriend of The Weeknd’s slicked-down, center-parted raven hair only encouraged that comparison.
Model Alessandra Ambrosio had a similarly dark, dramatic style in a plunging Versace gown with ribcage cutouts, which she paired with a thick black choker and kohl-rimmed eyes. Selena Gomez also opted for a deep hue: Her Calvin Klein gown shimmered in navy and side cutouts, and an open back added interest to the sleek silhouette.
The singer changed into a brighter look when it came time to take the stage as an announcer. Gomez slipped into a red silk Cushnie et Ochs gown that also featured just a peek of skin thanks to narrow slashes under the chest. And actress Kaley Cuoco turned up at the awards show in a sparkly disco-worthy Naeem Khan jumpsuit accented with a triangular cutout, showing off her upper abs, and a larger one on her back.
