The Film Independent Spirit Awards tend to see more colorful ensembles, but not so much on this year’s red carpet. A number of stars stepped out Saturday in black and white, instead.
The Get Down actress Yolonda Ross chose a wide-legged jumpsuit and matching jacket, designed by New York-based brand KAHINDO, which she paired with a rainbow clutch by Kent Stetson.
Dope star Kiersey Clemons, styled by Jason Bolden, wore a tiered and ruffled Prabal Gurung dress that was perfect for twirling around.
Known for her black-and-white uniform, Janelle Monae arrived in a Salvatore Ferragamo blouse and skirt, as well as a vertically striped coat. The Moonlight and Hidden Figures star, who works with stylist Maeve Reilly, has said her favorite palette is a way to “pay homage to my working-class roots.” (Her mom was a janitor, her father a trash man and her stepfather a postal worker.)

Kerry Washington, Amanda Peet and Kate Beckinsale also attended the awards ceremony in various styles of the classic color combo.
Washington wore a Prada midi dress that was accented with paillette and crystal floral embellishments; Peet opted for a black long sleeve top and sequin-embellished skirt; and Beckinsale’s daring look involved a white feathered bodice and hip-hugging black skirt.
Rounding out the black-and-white trendsetters were Audrey Plaza and Riley Keough. Plaza donned a patterned blouse and leather skirt, while Keough kept it simple in a white dress and Op Art pattterned Louis Vuitton bag.
