Can’t keep up with what’s been going on in the social media world? Fret not. Here, a gathering of what stars, artists and brands have been up to this week on social media.
The New Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has rocked and rolled social media over the past 48 hours. In “Look What You Made Me Do,” her latest single off of her upcoming album, Reputation, the singer reveals that “the old Taylor is dead,” igniting a firestorm of speculative tweets and conspiracy theories. The most popular on social media thus far is that “Look What You Made Me Do” is a Kanye West dis track. The most telltale clue is the lyric “Don’t like your tilted stage,” which could refer to the setup on the rapper’s Yeezus Tour. The last word on the beef was in June 2016, when Swift blasted West and wife Kim Kardashian for a post on Snapchat that revealed a recording of a phone call about “Famous,” a Taylor Swift dis track of West’s.
Nov. 10 is the release date of Reputation, which coincides with the anniversary of West’s mother, Donda West’s, death, but Swift’s record label quickly put out a statement refuting the connection. To make matters worse, the BeyHive is swarming on Swift’s social media in the name of cultural appropriation, tweeting the singer is stealing the creative concept behind Beyonce’s “Formation” video. While critics online are swift to build up drama, one has to wonder if Swift’s transformative image is exactly right for this challenging time in her life — the singer was recently vindicated in a groping trial.
