Proximity to the ocean aside, there was something fishy about the photos of Taylor Swift and alleged new beau Tom Hiddleston that surfaced Wednesday afternoon. (You know the ones.)
To start, how did Swift — a veteran of celebrity paparazzi culture — not realize that she would be photographed snogging an also-famous man en plein air? Has she not learned her lesson from the aftermath of the Harry Styles photos? (Or the Jake Gyllenhaal photos, or John Mayer photos or Conor Kennedy photos?) And what about Calvin Harris? Does the 26-year-old popstar have no sympathy for the feelings of her sweet Scottish ex?

But perhaps the most burning question which arose after The Sun first published images of the pair — which has thus been dubbed “Swiddleston,” for better or for worse — canoodling on the less-than-tropical sands of Rhode Island, was this: Why is Tom Hiddleston wearing $425 suede desert boots on the beach?
We get it — June gloom and what not means the weather can be a bit nippy, but still. Everyone knows that suede plus water equals disaster, and we’d expect the 35-year-old actor to know better than to put his Aquatalia Ace boots in harm’s way. The Italian all-weather brand has been seen on the likes of Kate Middleton, too, so you know they’re something special.
Now, if you believe the conspiracy theories, the “leaked” photos could have all been an elaborate plan orchestrated by the Taylor Swift PR Machine in order to distract from Kim Kardashian calling Swift a liar in her GQ profile. (Kudos to them if that was the plan, because it kind of worked.) But regardless, we suggest that next time they think through all the details, from head to desert boot.
