The Wing has hired its first communications director.
Zara Rahim will oversee strategic communications for the network of women’s work and social spaces founded by former public relations vp Audrey Gelman and Class Pass alumna Lauren Kassan in New York in 2016.
Most recently the Communications Director at Vogue magazine, where she was known for working behind-the-scenes on diversity efforts, Rahim left the glossy in June as part of restructuring at the Conde Nast title. She previously served as a national spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, Uber and worked for President Barack Obama in both the White House and on his re-election campaign.
“I’m so thrilled to join The Wing as they continue creating professional and inclusive community spaces for women across the country, and soon the world,” Rahim said in a statement. “In a time when it’s more important than ever, I was drawn to The Wing’s mission of creating new opportunities, ideas and conversations that will lead to greater mobility and prosperity for women — I’m looking forward to helping them tell their story.”
The company’s first PR hire, Rahim will focus on The Wing’s expansion, starting with its San Francisco opening in early October and its L.A. opening in January 2019. She will also be working on the brand’s civic and community engagement. (The Wing has been a target for activists alleging the network practices gender discrimination.) In September, The Wing will launch an app that will allow members to connect digitally with one another, even when they aren’t in the spaces.
