Warren Beatty and Annette Bening’s eldest son has made a very public statement – on YouTube — about his transition from female to male.
In the video, Stephen Ira Beatty — born Kathlyn Elizabeth Beatty — calls himself “a trans man, a faggy queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut.”
Stephen, 20, lists many friends as his greatest supporters when he came out and transitioned socially at age 14. But he makes no mention of his famous folks.
Stephen is currently a sophomore at the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in New York. He’s also an activist for the transgender community, and writes a blog ‘Super Mattachine‘ for the WeHappyTrans website. His blog name refers to the Mattachine Society, an early gay rights group founded in 1948.
He races through a lengthy list of his trans-gender role models, referencing cult-famous historical figures and pioneers in the community, and reveals himself be well educated, well-read and politically astute.

He explains that he’s not presenting his “fem‘ side” in the video, but insists “I wear like lots of necklaces and rings and ribbons around my neck and things like that.”
“It’s rare that my gender is misread based on my fem presentation, which I really appreciate. And that’s totally a privilege, being on hormones and being perceived, being read that way — as male, even though I’m presenting in a fem way. It’s totally a privilege. It’s nice to finally have my identity be legible to people.”
Stephen says his personal style icons include Truman Capote ( he loved the writer’s long flowing scarves) and “any male-identified person who wears thigh-highs or garters.”

Finally, Stephen says: ‘”I am going to have babies, and give them onesies, with “This is what a trans-feminist looks like” on them … which is something I’ve decided to definitely do.”
