The sound team from The Revenant won the live-action feature category at the Cinema Audio Society's 52nd annual awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing on Saturday at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Accepting the award were Chris Duesterdiek, Jon Taylor, Frank Montano, Randy Thom, Conrad Hensel, Michael Miller and Geody Sincavage. They topped a field that included the nominated sound mixing teams behind Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Hateful Eight and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

For this year's Academy Award in sound mixing, the nominees are The Revenant, along with Bridge of Spies, Mad Max, Star Wars and The Martian.

The CAS award for feature animation went to the sound mixing team behind Disney/Pixar's Inside Out. Honorees included Doc Kane, who returned to the podium later in the evening, as he was also this year’s Career Achievement Award winner. Also receiving trophies for Inside Out were Michael Semanick (who was also a nominee in this category for The Good Dinosaur and Hotel Transylvania 2), Tom Johnson, Joel Iwataki and Mary Jo Lang.

Garry Marshall and CAS past president David Fleur presented the Career Achievement Award to Kane, a four-time Oscar nominee for Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Incredibles and Ratatouille and who has more than 350 movie credits to his name, including many Disney and Pixar titles. The first ADR mixer to receive this award, Kane thanked his colleagues and said, "The saying that you're only as good as the people around you couldn't be more true."

Bryan Cranston and sound mixer John Ross presented the CAS Filmmaker Award to their Trumbo director Jay Roach. "My Oscar nomination for Trumbo is largely due to Jay Roach's talent," Cranston said, adding that he hopes to work with him again "but we have to find a way to get a bear into the movie."

Said Roach, thanking the sound community as he accepted the award, "Sound to me is everything. If you don't have unbelievably good sound, [the movie] doesn't work."

Winners in the television categories included the sound teams from Game of Thrones (one-hour TV series), Modern Family (half-hour series), Fargo (TV movie or miniseries), and Live From Lincoln Center: Danny Elfman's Music from the Films of Tim Burton (nonfiction/variety/specials).

Technical Achievement Awards were presented to Sound Devices SL-6 and iZotope RX5.

A student recognition award was presented to Matt Yocum of Savannah College of Art and Design.

During a cocktail reception and in conjunction with the awards, there also was an exhibit of early sound devices presented by CAS with the Antique Phonograph Society. The exhibit included the only surviving Edison Kinetophone (1894) and an original Bergmann edition of an Edison tinfoil phonograph (1878).
