At the 76th Golden Globe Awards, Hollywood’s leading men moved away from peacocking and rose to the occasion with a return to sophisticated, timeless styles.

But that doesn’t mean boring: There were sharp strokes of color and texture. Bradley Cooper looked flawless in cream, while John Krasinski, Viggo Mortenson and Idris Elba opted for hues of green and blue. So did Mahershala Ali, who crushed it it in a tux and (bravo!) coordinating shawl with a posh paisley print.

Of course, Chadwick Boseman couldn't resist going for superhero flash in an embroidered silver tux — his version of understated.

See the best-dressed men from the Golden Globes red carpet below.

  • Christian Bale

The best actor winner for his role as Dick Cheney in Vice looked sleek in black-on-black-on-black: a Brioni suit, shirt and tie with Cartier accessories and Tods loafers, styled by Jeanne Yang.

  • Bradley Cooper

A cream Gucci tux with a coordinating vest and white evening shirt was a fresh choice for the A Star Is Born nominee (and it was his idea, says stylist Ilaria Urbinati), accented with an IWC watch and his dad’s cufflinks.

  • John Krasinski

Attending with his nominated wife Emily Blunt, Krasinski went for “a whole blue situation,” says stylist Ilaria Urbinati, in a blue Brunello Cucinelli tux with a satin shawl collar, blue bow tie, blue Louboutins, a blue IWC watch and blue Montblanc cufflinks.

  • Chadwick Boseman

Per usual, the Black Panther star (styled by Ashley Weston) shined bright on the red carpet in a custom silver metallic Versace tuxedo with allover embroidery. He accessorized with Louboutin shoes and Tiffany & Co. jewels.

  • Rami Malek

The Bohemian Rhapsody nominee looked impeccable in a custom black Givenchy tux contrasted with a crisp white bow tie and shirt, plus Givenchy logo-strap shoes, a Cartier watch and cufflinks. “Freddie Mercury was so flamboyant in his wardrobe, and I think Rami wanted to differentiate himself from the character,” says Urbinati. “He felt very strongly that he specifically wanted to wear black.”

  • Mahershala Ali

The winner for his supporting actor role in Green Book hit all the right notes in a custom gray tux and trousers by Etro and a coordinating blue shawl, all with a paisley pattern.

  • Idris Elba

The proud dad, supporting his 17-year-old daughter Isan, the Golden Globes Ambassador, looked dapper in a forest green tux and vest by Ozwald Boateng with just the right touch of subtle texture and matching shoes.

  • Michael B. Jordan

With the help of Ade Samuel, the Black Panther star looked stellar in a custom black double-breasted tux with a white dress shirt and black bow tie designed by Riccardo Tisci for Burberry and a Piaget watch.

  • Viggo Mortensen

The Green Book nominee's style was spot-on: a navy shawl-collar tux and silk bow tie by Dior Men contrasted with a crisp white shirt.

  • James Van Der Beek

Van der Beek, there with the cast of Pose, mixed things up with stylist Ilaria Urbinati by donning a texture-rich chocolate brown velvet  tux jacket paired with matching wool trousers (both custom by Isaia), plus patent Louboutin loafers, Montblanc cufflinks and an IWC watch.
