NAACP Image Awards: Lizzo Named Entertainer of the Year; 'Just Mercy,' 'Black-ish' Among Top Winners

Lizzo on Saturday night was crowned entertainer of the year at the 51st NAACP Images Awards, a ceremony that recognizes the best in film, television, music and literature. The kudocast was hosted by Black-ish's Anthony Anderson, who also notched his sixth career win during the event.

Additional winners included Just Mercy for outstanding motion picture, while Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx scored acting nods for their performances in the film. Lupita Nyong'o was named outstanding actress in a motion picture for Us, and Marsai Martin was tapped as outstanding supporting actress for Little.

Among television honors, Greenleaf was named outstanding drama series and Black-ish was crowned best comedy series. Omari Hardwick was honored for his performance in the drama series Power, while Jharrel Jerome was tapped as outstanding actor in a limited series for Ava DuVernay's When They See Us. Niecy Nash also earned a nod for her performance on the series, which follows the Central Park Five. Angela Bassett was named outstanding actress in a drama series for 911, and Tracee Ellis Ross took home the outstanding actress in a comedy series award for Black-ish. Fellow Black-ish stars who also won on the night included Anderson for outstanding actor and double-winner Martin for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series.

Over on the music side, Lil Nas X was named breakthrough artist and Bruno Mars was tapped as outstanding male artist. Beyoncé won multiple awards, including outstanding variety show for Homecoming, outstanding album and female artist.

Following the In Memoriam segment, a special tribute was paid to the late basketball star Kobe Bryant in the form of a visual presentation with images from the former athlete's career integrated with audio clips of him thanking his fans at a Los Angeles Lakers game. 

The awards show aired live from Pasadena on BET from 8-10 p.m. ET. Netflix led the TV nominations with 30, with an additional 12 in the film categories, for a total of 42. Universal Pictures led the motion picture categories with 15 mentions, while RCA Records led in the music recording categories with 14 and Penguin Random House led with eight in the literary categories.

During the show, Rihanna received the President's Award, while U.S. Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis (D-Ga.) received the NAACP Chairman's Award.

Alicia Keys, Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, Evan Alex, Jamie Foxx, Janelle Monae, JB Smoove, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lena Waithe, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael B. Jordan, Morgan Freeman, Octavia Spencer, Robin Thede, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Sterling K. Brown, Tamron Hall, Tiffany Haddish and Winston Duke were among the stars that made an appearance.
