'Parasite' became only the second foreign-language film to earn a best cast SAG Awards nomination.
It's been 21 years since a foreign-language film first landed a best cast nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Wednesday, the cast of Parasite became the second to land a coveted spot for the top prize.
South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho's Parasite, an eerie tale of a family steeped in poverty who hustle their way into working for a wealthy household, was nominated for the SAG Awards' best ensemble alongside Quentin Tarantino's nostalgic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese's mob saga The Irishman, Jay Roach's Fox News drama Bombshell and Taika Waititi's anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit. Parasite is the only independent contender in a year stacked with studio offerings where many other indie films — The Farewell, Waves, The Lighthouse, Honey Boy and Booksmart, to name a few — were shut out.
Rarely has an Oscar best picture winner prevailed without landing a SAG best ensemble nod, although the most recent Oscar best picture winner, Green Book, did not. Rare is it also for a foreign-language film to be in the best ensemble category, with Alfonso Cuarón's Roma missing out on the nomination last year, which was perceived as a blow to its Oscar chances.
Parasite did not land any individual acting nominations, which favored A-listers this year. The best actor race will see stalwarts Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Rocketman breakout Taron Egerton duke it out for the award. Meanwhile, the best actress category comprises Renée Zellweger (Judy), Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and Lupita Nyong'o (Us).
Notable omissions included The Irishman's Robert De Niro and The Farewell's Awkwafina, the latter of whom landed a Golden Globe nod.
The supporting races also feature a star-studded lineup. Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) will take on Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Jamie Foxx (Just Mercy), and The Irishman's Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for best supporting actor. The best supporting actress race will be a tight run between Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers), double-nominee Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Bombshell's Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman.
Other notable snubs include Sam Mendes' war epic 1917, Greta Gerwig's Little Women and Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell.
On the TV side, stars overlooked by Monday's Golden Globe nominations — including When They See Us actor Jharrel Jerome, This Is Us' Sterling K. Brown and more stars from The Morning Show, The Handmaid's Tale, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Schitt's Creek — were all nominated for SAG Awards.
The best drama ensemble nominees are Big Little Lies, The Crown, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid's Tale and Stranger Things, with Thrones' Peter Dinklage, Stranger Things' David Harbour, The Crown's Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman, and The Handmaid's Tale's Elisabeth Moss earning individual nominations. Game of Thrones and Stranger Things also earned stunt ensemble nods.
The best comedy ensemble nominees are Barry, Fleabag, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Schitt's Creek, with Barry's Bill Hader; Fleabag's Andrew Scott and Phoebe Waller-Bridge; The Kominsky Method's Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas; Maisel's Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan; and Schitt's Creek's Catherine O'Hara all earning individual nominations. Christina Applegate was also nominated for best actress in a comedy series for her performance in Dead to Me.
The best actor in a limited series nominees are True Detective's Mahershala Ali, The Loudest Voice's Russell Crowe, Chernobyl's Jared Harris, Jerome and Fosse/Verdon's Sam Rockwell.
The best actress in a limited series nominees are The Act's Patricia Arquette and Joey King, Unbelievable's Toni Collette, Chernobyl's Emily Watson and Fosse/Verdon's Michelle Williams.
America Ferrera and Danai Gurira on Wednesday announced the film and TV nominees for the 26th annual SAG Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA. The stunt ensemble nominees were announced just before that.
The 26th annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. De Niro will receive the Life Achievement Award, presented by Leonardo DiCaprio.
