Welcome to The Bachelorette version of The Hollywood Reporter's Power Rankings. Each week, THR's Bachelor experts will be tuning into the romantic connections and dramatic shenanigans taking place on season 12 of the long-running ABC franchise. In an effort to cater to viewers who opt out of show spoilers, these rankings are based on opinions and observations week-by-week.

The May 23 premiere with Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher narrowed 26 suitors down to 20 by the episode's end.

Thanks to ABC's bios and introductions to the men ahead of the premiere, fans expected a wild group to arrive in The Bachelorette limos — and they weren't disappointed. "Everyone is hammered, apparently!" JoJo said after two of her suitors drunkenly stumbled into her one-on-one interview. One of them ended up stripping down to his underwear and jumping in the pool, leading the pack of the men who couldn't hold their liquor tonight.

JoJo also promised a "very diverse cast" when she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter last week. Fletcher's group included 21 white and six nonwhite contestants, which, compared to seasons past, makes season 12 one of the more diverse groupings. (The previous Bachelorette with Kaitlyn Bristowe featured only four nonwhite men.) But after tonight's rose ceremony, only three nonwhite contestants remain.

The full season trailer, which aired at the end of the two-hour launch, teased to the dark side of early villain Chad, which was heavily hinted (by himself) during Monday's episode, as well as advanced relationships between JoJo and a handful of the men, including early frontrunners Jordan, Luke and Robby. Taking a step back, here are those remaining 20 contestants ranked by their performance and initial spark with JoJo from tonight.

Check back in next week to see how the rest of the season drama unfolds (full season trailer below) with THR's weekly live blog and share your comments on Twitter using the #THRose hashtag.

  1. 1

Jordan, 27, former pro quarterback, Chico, CA

After learning during his backstory that the former pro quarterback felt he grew up in the shadow of older brother Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers quarterback and boyfriend to Olivia Munn), Jordan's genuine approach to the experience stood out to both those watching at home and to JoJo, who picked him not only for the first impression rose, but also for the night's only kiss. The first impression rose doesn't always mean much — as one of the men pointed out, "Olivia got the first impression rose last season and she got left on an island" — but it's an auspicious start to Jordan quickly separating himself from the rest of the pack. And JoJo's giddy response is certainly another: "Kissing Jordan feels perfect and right ... His butt, his butt! I gotta start doing squats."

  2. 2

Luke, 31, war veteran from Burnet, TX

We'll have to admit: Country boy Luke's entrance on Coconut the Unicorn immediately felt over-the-top. But when he gave his reasoning, we were reminded that JoJo entered Ben Higgins' season of The Bachelor wearing a unicorn on her head because she was searching for her magical guy that she wants to believe exists. "I believe unicorns are real," Luke, who hails from a small town and opened up about his time in the military at the beginning of the episode, told JoJo — throwing his name into the ring for the type of guy JoJo has been searching for. The pair had instant chemistry that took them through the night, as they bonded during their one-on-one time and connected over their Texan roots.

  3. 3

James Taylor, 29, singer-songwriter from Katy, TX

The other James Taylor has some pipes! Usually the singer guy who tries to promote his own music on the show raises an immediate red flag. But there's something very sweet about James, a trait that JoJo seemed to notice instantly. "I can't believe those boys from Dallas Texas let you escape, they must be crazy," he sang with his Texan twang, getting a big laugh from JoJo, a fellow Texan.

  4. 4

Robert “Robby,” 27, former competitive swimmer from Jacksonville, FL

Robby immediately earned points when he had JoJo swigging from the bottle one minute into meeting her (JoJo's mom memorably drank from a champagne bottle during her tense hometown date with Ben Higgins last season). We're not entirely sure where Robby lies on the confidence-to-cocky or honesty meter (the trailer seems to question his relationship status), but we know the tricks of editing and after his premiere performance and connection with JoJo, we're open to finding out.

  5. 5

Wells, 31, radio DJ from Nashville, TN

Wells used his connections to surprise JoJo with All-4-One and an "I Swear" serenade goes a long way. A for effort.

  6. 6

Chase, 27, medical sale representative from Highlands Ranch, CO

Chase seems like the type of guy to sit patiently in the background and let his drunken and over-the-top competitors fall on their face before swooping in to make his big impression. We like that.

  7. 7

Christian, 26, telecom consultant from Los Angeles, CA

Christian had us at Hello with his touching backstory. Not only did he open up about growing up biracial and not having a relationship with his father's side of the family because they couldn't accept him, but he now takes care of his younger brothers and strives to be a role model. To boot, every time we saw him on camera, he was flashing the above smile.

  8. 8

Alex, 26, U.S. Marine from Oceanside, CA

JoJo clearly enjoys a man who can do push-ups while she drinks wine on his back.

  9. 9

Ali, 27, bartender from Santa Monica, CA

We spotted JoJo's attraction to Ali when he romanced her with his piano skills. Plus, the bartender just seems straight-up nice.

  10. 10

Derek, 29, commercial banker from Ft. Lauderdale, FL

It's always good to have at least one shy guy in the mix.

  11. 11

Nick B., 33, electrical engineer, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Kudos to Nick for not only wearing the Santa suit and beard for the entire episode, but for actually impressing JoJo with the gag — he even got her to sit on his lap! JoJo really enjoyed that Christmas came early, and anyone following along with THR's liveblog will also thank him for providing the night's drinking game (A sip for every time Nick said, "Jo Jo Jo Jo Jo!")

  12. 12

Grant, 28, firefighter from San Francisco, CA

Grant made a bold move when he introduced himself by bringing up the whole "Ben's I love you" thing — last season, Ben told both JoJo and winner Lauren Bushnell that he loved them, which left JoJo extra-blindsided during the finale. That 's one confident man.

  13. 13

William “Will,” 26, civil engineer from Jersey City, NJ

Awkward kiss alert! Will mis-judged his one-on-one time with JoJo and asked for a kiss too soon, leaving the door open for Jordan to swoop in and land the first (and only) real kiss of the night. "Now that's a kiss," she said of Jordan, after the Will snafu. Ouch. But JoJo gave him a rose, so here's to second chances.

  14. 14

Brandon, 28, hipster from Los Angeles, CA

"I didn't watch last season, I know nothing at all about you," he told JoJo. Points for honesty, plus we know he's super chill and can't possibly be there for the wrong reasons.

  15. 15

James F., 34, boxing club owner from Nashville, TN

The jury's still out on James F. A little digging reveals he's an actor (he recently appeared on ABC's Nashville), so we remain hesitant until shown otherwise.

  16. 16

Chad, 28, luxury real estate agent from Tulsa, OK

Villain alert! There's always one, but it usually takes more than two minutes to figure out who it is. Chad had some zingers tonight — "These guys are playing the super-sensitive card: 'I'm afraid,' 'I have feelings.' Shutup." — and wasted no time revealing his narcissistic and cocky side to the viewers at home by insulting Ben Higgins and saying things like, "I'm pretty confident that if I wanted [JoJo], I'll have her." But most concerning is the other face he presented to JoJo, who called him "vulnerable" and "endearing." The season trailer hints that Chad continues to cause trouble ahead and that JoJo can't help but like a "bad boy." Something tells us Chad will be sticking around to stir trouble for a while.

  17. 17

Evan, 33, erectile dysfunction specialist from Nashville, TN

After ABC released the names and jobs of all the men, there was much hype surrounding the notorious "erectile dysfunction specialist." But aside from seeing his backstory at the top of the episode, we didn't get to see much from Evan, who seemed more like a fan than a viable suitor.

  18. 18

Vincent “Vinny,” 28, barber from Delray Beach, FL

Here is precisely when Vinny lost us: "I will never let you beg for my love on a bathroom floor," he told JoJo after drunkenly barging into her one-on-one interview. The stammering scene caused one of the night's funniest reactions from JoJo, who was shocked to the point of giddy laughter, but this barber should have gotten cut for his rookie night-one mistake.

  19. 19

Daniel, 31, Canadian from Vancouver, B.C., Canada

Damn, Daniel: You really messed up. We are left flummoxed as to why JoJo kept the guy who got so hammered that he stripped down to his underwear ("Are you wearing a thong?" was one of JoJo's better lines tonight) and jumped in the pool, over some of the other quieter guys who got the boot. The "White Canadian wasted" Daniel might blame this one on the alcohol — "If I was gay, this would be paradise" — but our first impression has been made. Even the hipster landed a joke at his expense!

  20. 20

James S., 27, “Bachelor” superfan from Phoenix, AZ

At first this guy read like clear stunt-casting by the producers, but his bumbling conversation as the credits were rolling showed that James was beyond nervous to meet the one-and-only Chris Harrison. He might actually be a true Bachelor superfan, which makes his inclusion even sadder.

  21. 21

Jonathan, 29, technical sales representative from Vancouver, B.C., Canada

Poor Jonathan, who fell for the producers' entrance-making advice. Arriving in a kilt due to his half-Scottish heritage was fine, but telling JoJo he wasn't wearing any underwear underneath was a fateful fail.

  22. 22

Peter, 26, staffing agency manager from Chicago, IL

Peter seemed genuinely bowled over by his elimination, despite viewers at home never seeing him and JoJo interact.

  23. 23

Jake, 26, landscape architect from Playa Vista, CA

A lack of airtime made it hard to weigh in, so we defer to JoJo on this one.

  24. 24

Colin “Coley,” 27, real estate consultant from Chicago, IL

Coley got more airtime during the rose ceremony than he did all episode, but we barely heard him speak.

  25. 25

Nick S., 26, software salesman from San Francisco, CA

Ascot-wearing headshot aside, Nick S. more than deserved to be sent home after being the first to drunkenly barge in on JoJo during her on-camera interview. But thank you for the entertainment, and for giving us a peek inside the secret interview room!

  26. 26

Sal, 28, operations manager from Fort Lauderdale, FL

When Sal introduced himself to JoJo he brought her a gift: blue balls. About the stress balls: "If at any point you feel stressed, I give you permission to squeeze my balls." Total camera time after his intro: negligible.
