'The Lego Ninjago Movie': Meet the Voices Behind Each Animated Character

Dave Franco, Fred Armisen, Michael Peña, Abbi Jacobson, Kumail Nanjiani and Zach Woods team up to protect their homeland, Ninjago, from monstrous villains.

Based on the toy line and animated television series, The Lego Ninjago Movie is the third Lego film to hit the big screen, following 2014's The Lego Movie and 2017's The Lego Batman Movie.

Lego Ninjago follows six teenage ninjas as they struggle to balance going to school with defending their island from destruction. The ninjas are trained by their mentor, Master Wu (voiced by Jackie Chan), while the villainous Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux) plots against them.

Ahead of the movie's release Sept. 22, check out which stars are giving voice to the film's characters below.

  • Dave Franco

    Lloyd Garmadon

    Dave Franco returns to the Lego universe as Lloyd Garmadon, also known as The Green Ninja. The character of Lloyd previously made a cameo appearance in The Lego Movie and is back again to defend Ninjago from the evil forces of Lord Garmadon, who also happens to be his father. Franco also appeared briefly in The Lego Movie as the voice of Wally and stars in the Netflix original film 6 Balloons, to be released later this year.

  • Jackie Chan

    Master Wu

    Actor and martial artist Jackie Chan voices of Master Wu, the leader of the Secret Ninja Force. Master Wu, the brother of Lord Garmadon, acts as a mentor to the six young ninjas. Chan is set to star in action films The Foreigner and Bleeding Steel, out later this year.

    The vengeful warlord Lord Garmadon (voiced by Justin Theroux), struggles to deal with his estranged son, Lloyd, while simultaneously plotting his return to power over Ninjago City. Theroux recently appeared in The Girl on the Train and Zoolander 2 and previously voiced a character in the animated film Megamind.

  • Olivia Munn

    Olivia Munn voices Koko, the mother of Lloyd and ex-wife of Lord Garmadon. Munn recently starred in X-Men: Apocalypse as Psylocke and next appears in Ocean’s Eight and The Predator, both set for release in 2018.

  • Fred Armisen

    Portlandia co-creator and star Fred Armisen voices the character of Cole, the laid-back Ninja of Earth. Armisen starred on Saturday Night Live from 2002 to 2016 and is currently the band leader of The 8G Band on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

  • Michael Peña

    Kai, the Ninja of Fire, wields two katanas and is voiced by Michael Peña. Peña is known for his appearances in Ant-Man and The Martian and next voices Grubber in My Little Pony: The Movie, out later this year.



  • Abbi Jacobson

    Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson voices Nya, the Ninja of Water, who also happens to be Kai’s sister. As the only female member of the Secret Ninja Force, Nya is a fierce warrior who utilizes a spear as her weapon of choice. Jacobsen is set to appear in 6 Balloons later this year, along with Lego Ninjago co-star Dave Franco.

  • Kumail Nanjiani

    Kumail Nanjiani voices Jay, the blue Ninja of Lightning. In comparison to his fellow ninjas, Jay is more reserved in nature and often struggles with insecurities outside of his master kung-fu fighting abilities. Nanjiani stars in the HBO television series Silicon Valley and appeared in the film Fist Fight earlier this year.

  • Zach Woods

    Zane, the robotic nindroid and sixth member of the Secret Ninja Force, is voiced by Zach Woods. Zane is the white Ninja of Ice. Woods, who also stars in Silicon Valley alongside Nanjiani, is set to appear in Steven Spielberg's upcoming film The Papers alongside Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Sarah Paulson and Alison Brie.
