The Hollywood Reporter’s 2021 Women in Entertainment Power 100
While the past 14 months may have seen a shift in the usual benchmarks for success, these execs, filmmakers, showrunners and multihyphenates rose above the turmoil with vision and resilience. Regina King, Donna Langley and, yes, Meghan Markle are among THR's annual list of women dominating a still-reeling industry.
For its 29th annual Women in Entertainment Power 100, THR focuses on the execs, filmmakers, showrunners, producers and actors who made moves in a year unlike any other. And in creating this list of entertainment’s top female leaders, editors considered portfolio sizes, series loads, TV ratings, awards hauls, deals, employees overseen, revenue/profit generated, subscriber counts and what box office there was to report.
Edited by Mikey O’Connell. Profiles written by Kirsten Chuba, Ashley Cullins, Rebecca Ford, Mia Galuppo, Carolyn Giardina, Lesley Goldberg, Rebecca Keegan, Pamela McClintock, Mikey O’Connell, Lacey Rose, Bryn Sandberg, Tatiana Siegel and Rebecca Sun.

Stacey Abrams - Producer; Founder, Fair Fight
Image Credit: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images The Georgia-based political activist earned her first producing credit in 2020, for the Oscar-shortlisted doc All In: The Fight for Democracy, while one of her romance novels is in development at CBS and she just penned a new legal thriller. But Abrams’ key role in Hollywood is as the town’s voting rights moral compass; she helped flip the Senate for Democrats and advised creators on their Georgia production plans as that state enacts restrictive new voting laws. Her evangelists on this list are too many to name.

Image Credit: Courtesy of Subject The Buenos Aires native is prepping the release of the MCU’s fourth phase, beginning with Black Widow (July 9) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Sept. 3) — helmed by the first solo female (Cate Shortland) and Asian (Destin Daniel Cretton) directors for the studio, respectively. And while the pandemic kept tentpoles out of theaters this past year, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier proved to be a boon for sister streamer Disney+ — and her studio’s prestige aspirations.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge - Actor, Writer
Image Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage The Fleabag writer and star’s big follow-up to her beloved comedy, a pricey script polish on Bond flick No Time to Die, should finally see the light of day if its Oct. 8 release isn’t delayed again. Waller-Bridge next heads back in front of the camera for nothing less than the lead opposite Harrison Ford in his fifth Indiana Jones feature.

Emma Watts - President, Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group
Image Credit: Courtesy of Subject Arriving at Paramount from Disney in summer 2020 was a homecoming of sorts for Watts; the move reunited her with former boss Jim Gianopulos. She’s stayed busy since. Among numerous development moves, she set a new course for the next Star Trek and Transformers installments, hired Minari director Lee Isaac Chung to helm Your Name and struck a first-look deal with Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort Productions.

Erin Westerman - President of Production, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group
Image Credit: John Duarte While many studios suffered as the pandemic halted moviegoing and production, Westerman was able to get 11 films into production, including Borderlands (Cate Blanchett), Shotgun Wedding (Jennifer Lopez) and White Bird: A Wonder Story. With a knack for courting A-list talent and winning bidding wars (recent gets include The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Nicolas Cage and the adaptation of Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret), Westerman also helped shepherd two of the COVID-19 era’s buzziest streaming releases: Hulu’s Run, starring Sarah Paulson, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

Oprah Winfrey - CEO, OWN
Image Credit: Courtesy of Subject Ever the unparalleled booker, Winfrey landed the get of the year in March — a barn-burning sit-down with expatriated royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. It brought a boffo 17.1 million viewers to CBS News, netted a reported $7 million-plus licensing fee to Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and inspired a bit of an existential crisis for the Commonwealth. The mogul’s quick follow-up, the book What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing, sits atop the New York Times best-seller list.

Jana Winograde - President, Showtime Entertainment
Image Credit: SHOWTIME Winograde’s programming led the cable brand to record signups in 2020. She’s kept the momentum up into 2021, with Showtime’s OTT service enjoying its best quarterly growth to date. Bolstering those numbers (and Emmy buzz) was nail-bitter Your Honor. The limited series ranks as the network’s most streamed ever and its biggest debut season for any show. Winograde is now shepherding this year’s slate of shows, which includes Jeff Daniels’ American Rust, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s The Man Who Fell to Earth and the May 9 debut of Ziwe.

Susan Wojcicki - CEO, YouTube
Image Credit: Courtesy of Asa Mathat/Susan Wojcicki With an early proliferation of vloggers, YouTube spawned the first generation of internet influencers. Now, competing against TikTok and Instagram, the Wojcicki-led video site is out to reclaim dominance in the creator economy. According to a Nielsen study commissioned by the company, in September YouTube reached more adults ages 18-49 than all linear TV networks combined, and its users watch 1 billion hours of video per day on the site. In the mainstream, the slate of original content coming to YouTube includes work from A-listers like Will Smith, Alicia Keys and LeBron James.

Zendaya - Actor
Image Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty Images In the past year, Zendaya snagged her first Emmy and generated awards buzz for her shot-in-quarantine face-off Malcolm & Marie, which also marked a deeper move into producing. The coming year may be even bigger, as the delayed film calendar is now packed with Zendaya vehicles Dune, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Chloé Zhao - Filmmaker
Image Credit: Joe Pugliese The Chinese filmmaker made history with her best director Oscar win for Nomadland, as only the second woman and the first woman of color to take that prize. Nomadland also was named best picture at the Academy Awards and earned a Golden Globe, two BAFTA Awards and a Directors Guild of America Award. With a no-frills vérité style, Zhao has managed to win over Hollywood’s biggest players, and she brings that unique perspective to her biggest canvas yet with Marvel’s Eternals, which Disney held back during the pandemic in order to give it a theatrical release Nov. 5.
