Movieguide Awards: 'Mary Poppins Returns,' 'Spider-Verse' Among Nominees (Exclusive)
The awards, honoring "well-made and uplifting" films and TV series, will be handed out Feb. 8 in a ceremony set to air on Hallmark Channel later in the month.
Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Grinch and Ralph Breaks the Internet are among the films nominated for the 27th annual Movieguide Awards.
The awards, which honor movies and TV series that are "both well-made and uplifting," will be handed out at a ceremony set for Feb. 8 at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles that will air on Hallmark Channel later in the month.
Those four pics will compete for a $25,000 prize (supported by a grant from the Ware Foundation) for best family movie of the year alongside God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness, I Can Only Imagine, Incredibles 2, Paddington 2, Peter Rabbit and Paul, Apostle of Christ.
"These movies are not only family-friendly, entertaining and well crafted," said Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movieguide, which reviews movies for parents and family audiences. "They also have strong stories which reveal the good, the true and the beautiful. That’s what the Movieguide Awards are all about."
Other honors will include best movie for mature audiences, the Epiphany Prizes for most inspiring movie and television program, the Faith & Freedom Awards for movies and television and the Grace Awards for most Inspiring performance in movies and television.
Also at the Feb. 8 gala, Baehr will present highlights of Movieguide's 2019 Report to the Entertainment Industry, which analyzes all films from the major and independent studios in regard to their box office performance and each movie’s content across thousands of data points. This annual report is described as "a barometer of what kinds of stories and messages deliver the best box office returns."
