Oscars: 20 Years of Acting Winners With Their Trophies

Every year, the Oscars names the best four actors in the supporting and leading role categories.

Some are surprising, like Marisa Tomei's supporting actress win for the comedy My Cousin Vinny.

Others were long overdue, such as Halle Berry's glass-shattering best actress award for Monster's Ball.

And after the winners are crowned, the four acting award recipients typically pose together backstage, clutching their Oscars, for a traditional group photo.

    This year, the Oscar awards for best supporting actor and best actress in a leading role went to Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri's Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand. Best supporting actress was awarded to Allison Janney from I, Tonya. Gary Oldman won his first Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

    Casey Affleck won best actor for Manchester by the Sea. Mahershala Ali took home best supporting actor for his role in Moonlight. Emma Stone and Viola Davis won the Oscars for best actress and best supporting actress for La La Land and Fences, respectively.

    Taking home best actor and best supporting actor were Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Rylance for The Revenant and Bridge of Spies, respectively. Brie Larson won best actress for Room, and Alicia Vikander nabbed best supporting actress for The Danish Girl.

    Christoph Waltz won his second best supporting actor award for Django Unchained. The best actor in a leading role award went to Daniel Day-Lewis from Lincoln, collecting his third Oscar. Jennifer Lawrence was named best actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. Anne Hathaway won the best supporting actress Oscar for the musical Les Miserables

    Three out of four of 2012's acting winners were also nominated in the same categories in 2018. Meryl Streep won best actress for The Iron Lady (nominated in 2018 for The Post), Octavia Spencer won best supporting actress for The Help (nominated six years later for The Shape of Water) and Christopher Plummer won best supporting actor for Beginners (in 2018 he was up for All The Money In The World). 2012's best actor winner was Jean Dujardin from The Artist

Heath Ledger won best supporting actor (for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight) posthumously. The award was accepted by his family.
