Oscars Host Jimmy Kimmel: 10 Memorable Awards Show Moments

From passing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the Emmys to dancing the Soulja Boy at the American Music Awards, here are a few highlights from the 2017 Oscars host.

Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the 2017 Academy Awards for the first time on Feb. 26.

However, he is no stranger to hosting award shows. Kimmel has hosted award shows from the Emmys to the ESPYs and the American Music Awards. Here is a look at some of his most memorable moments while on stage as both a host and presenter.

  • Emmys 2016

    "Road to the Emmys"

    Kimmel pretended to be late to the 2016 Emmys. The opening skit showed Kimmel hitchhiking across Los Angeles in order to make it on time for his hosting duties. The cast of Modern Family, James Corden in "Carpool Karaoke," Veep, Game of Thrones and others helped Kimmel in his journey.

    Kimmel’s opening monologue

    Kimmel started the night off with jokes about controversial topics. In his opening monologue, Kimmel referenced the O.J. Simpson trial, the Trump election and the topic of diversity in Hollywood. “If you are person of color in our audience tonight, especially if you are a nominee, please, find a white person right now, it shouldn’t be hard. I see a bunch of them right here. Just take a moment to reach out and say, ‘Thanks for your bravery.’ There you go. Make a rainbow connection,” Kimmel joked.

    Kimmel feeds the audience

    Kimmel showed a clip of his mother backstage making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in the audience at the 2016 Emmys. The kids of Stranger Things rode around on bicycles to help pass out the lunch sacks to the stars. “I know these shows are long and I know some of you haven’t eaten since Labor Day, so I have a little surprise for everyone,” Kimmel said. “So, my mother made 7,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Is anyone hungry right now?”

    Kimmel mocked by Matt Damon after losing

    As part of their ongoing joke that the two hate each other, Kimmel's longtime nemesis Matt Damon appeared on stage after Kimmel's show lost in the best variety talk series category. Damon casually ate an apple and teased that he'd missed the announcement of the last category. “This is so humiliating. You lost and now you have to stand out here for the rest of the night in front of everybody,” Damon joked. “When you probably want to just go home and curl up and cry.”

    Kimmel eats the envelope

    Kimmel presented the award for lead actor in a comedy series. “I have so much power right now. So, now I don’t know what to do here. Let’s see what’s on it,” Kimmel said as he opened the envelope. He pulled a pair of scissors out of his pocket, cut the winner’s name out of the center and stuffed it into his mouth. Kimmel continued to eat the paper as he announced the nominees and the winner.

    Kimmel gets Botox (and then punched) in opening skit

    Kimmel hosted the 2012 Emmys. In his opening skit, that year’s leading actresses pretended to be getting ready in the ladies' room for the  show. Kimmel burst through the doors crying about the bad Botox he got. The ladies took turns punching his face to get it back to normal.

    Kimmel tricks Tweeters

    Kimmel brought Tracy Morgan on the Emmy stage to fool those on Twitter. He told viewers at home to log onto social media to post the same tweet. He then convinced Morgan to lie on the stage while the post went viral. “Post ‘Oh my god, Tracy Morgan just passed out on stage at the Emmys. Turn ABC on Now,’” Kimmel said.

    Kimmel’s "In Memoriam" to himself

    “It is important to celebrate the living too, so tonight I would like you to join me in paying tribute to the life and work of someone all of us, someone every person in this room, admires, respects and loves,” Jimmy Kimmel said at the 2012 Emmys. Josh Groban began playing the piano and singing the lyrics to One Direction's “What Makes You Beautiful.” Behind him, a slideshow of Kimmel displayed for the audience.

    Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon walked arm in arm to present an award for outstanding actress in a comedy series. Kimmel congratulated Fallon on his first Emmy nomination. He then wrestled Fallon to the ground while trying to steal his acceptance speech. Kimmel read the speech to the audience. “But most of all I want to thank Jimmy Kimmel,” Kimmel read. “Jimmy has been there for me since day one. He is the kindest and most supportive person in my life. He would never mock me or belittle me especially in a large public venue such as this. I love you, Jimmy Kimmel.”

    Kimmel dances to Soulja Boy

    Kimmel hosted the 2007 American Music Awards. He said he was not allowed to write any jokes because he was technically on strike for the Writers Guild. However, he said he was allowed to dance. "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" turned on as he scanned the audience. Kelly Pickler and Jordin Sparks joined Kimmel on stage with Soulja Boy for the dance.
