Tom Hanks, Taraji P. Henson, Aziz Ansari, Michael B. Jordan, Emma Watson, Mark Ruffalo and J.K. Rowling are also top contenders for the awards, which highlight Periscope users for the first time.

Finalists for the 8th annual Shorty Awards — highlighting the best content across the social media landscape including Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine and, for the first time, Periscope — have been narrowed down to the best of the best, including Tom Hanks, Taraji P. Henson, Dwayne Johnson, Aziz Ansari, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adele, Michael B. Jordan and J.K. Rowling.

Additionally, the TV shows with noteworthy social content for the year include Empire, Game of Thrones and The Late Late Show With James Corden, among others. Emma Watson and Mark Ruffalo are included in the activism category, and Drake, Donald Trump and David Bowie are the subjects of some of the GIF of the Year nominees.

Founded and produced by Sawhorse Media, the Shorty Awards will be held April 11 at the Times Center in New York City and will be available via live stream at ShortyAwards.com. Finalists in each category — recognizing content for sports, journalism, fashion, humor and more — are determined by rankings from the Real Time Academy (rtacademy.org) as well as votes from fans via social media.
