Broadway honored its best Sunday night in New York.
The awards were handed out in a June 12 ceremony at 8 p.m., airing live on CBS (tape-delayed on the West Coast) from New York City's Beacon Theatre. James Corden made his debut as the annual event's emcee.
Hamilton led the race with a historic 16 nominations, winning 11 awards, including best musical. The Humans, The Color Purple and A View From the Bridge also took home top honors.
In his monologue, host James Corden addressed the tragic Orlando shooting, which took place earlier in the day.
"Our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity," Corden said in part. "You're not on your own. Your tragedy is our tragedy. Hate will never win. We have to make sure of that. Tonight's show stands as a symbol of that principle."
Also during the show, the American Theatre Wing — which hands out the Tonys — announced its new Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative, which is being funded with a $1.3 million, three-year grant from Lloyd Webber, that will support theater education opportunities for underserved young people and under-resourced public schools around the United States.
