One of the longest-running franchises in the horror world, Halloween movies have been terrifying audiences for nearly 40 years. The newest installment, with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode, is set to hit theaters on Oct. 19, just in time for its namesake holiday.

Curtis originated the role that would launch her career in 1978, starring alongside Donald Pleasence and Tony Moran — in the first of many films to feature killer Michael Myers. Since then, the franchise has spawned 10 sequels and reboots.

In anticipation for the new revival, The Hollywood Reporter takes a look back at the killing spree that started it all, as well trailers for every film that followed.

  • Halloween

    1978

The inaugural film in the Halloween franchise details the making of serial killer Michael Myers, who murders several women and teens from behind his signature mask on Halloween night. Directed by John Carpenter, the film stars Tony Moran as Myers and Curtis as Laurie Strode, the killer's young target.

  • Halloween II

    1981

The first sequel picks up right where the first film left off, with Curtis' Laurie rushed to the hospital and local police on the hunt for her murderous pursuer. When Myers evades capture, he and Laurie face off in round two.

  • Halloween III: Season of the Witch

    1982

Director Tommy Lee Wallace takes over the franchise for the third installment, which takes a break from Myers and Laurie, instead introducing witchcraft, as well as new villain Conal Cochran, played by Dan O'Herlihy. Tom Atkins and Stacey Nelkin round out the supporting cast of characters resisting Cochran's evil plot.

  • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

    1988

As the title suggests, the fourth film in the Halloween saga sees the reappearance of Myers, as well as the return of his most prized victim, Curtis' Laurie. Set a decade after Myers went on his first killing spree, Dwight H. Little takes the director's chair for the fourth installment, with George P. Wilbur stepping in as its cold-blooded killer.

  • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers

    1989

Donald Pleasence's Loomis takes center stage when Myers returns once again in the fifth Halloween — this time in search of his young niece. With Laurie out of the picture, Loomis faces Myers alone in his prolonged pursuit of justice.

  • Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers

    1995

For the second film in a row, Pleasence appears as the only returning original cast member in the sixth film, flanked by newcomers Paul Rudd, J.C. Brandy and Marianne Hagan, as the legend of Michael Myers continues to terrorize Haddonfield.

  • Halloween H20: 20 Years Later

    1998

Twenty years later, Curtis' Laurie has removed herself from her traumatic past in search of happier days as the dean of a private school in Northern California. But her healing process is disrupted when Myers comes back for her and her students, played by Michelle Williams and Josh Hartnett. Plus, Curtis' mother and Psycho star Janet Leigh makes a cameo.

  • Halloween: Resurrection

    2002

Busta Rhymes, Tyra Banks and more make up the cast of the eighth Halloween film, which sends a group of young men and women into Myers' haunted Haddonfield residence as part of a webcast prank. But the prank becomes real when Myers comes back, only to be challenged by Curtis' Laurie once again.

  • Halloween

    2007

The ninth Halloween film gets a fresh take from director Rob Zombie, who adopts the original story, recasting Laurie, Myers and Loomis for a new version of the tale of family vengeance. Malcolm McDowell stars as Loomis, Tyler Mane dons the mask of Myers and Scout Taylor-Compton takes over for Curtis as the new Laurie in the chilling retelling.

  • Halloween II

    2009

Like the first Halloween sequel, the second installment in the Zombie reboots begins with Taylor-Compton's Laurie in the hospital and Mane's Myers still on the loose, looking to finish what he started.

  • Halloween

    2018

The newest Halloween begins with a clean slate, building only on the original 1978 story. Curtis reprises her role as Laurie, who has been fighting to overcome her trauma ever since Myers' attempt on her life 40 years prior. But the new Laurie won't be a victim. Myers is back, and Laurie is ready.
