The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences on Tuesday announced the winners for the 2019 Webby Awards.
Will Smith, Childish Gambino, Monica Lewinsky, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, The Walking Dead and Westworld are among the people and projects receiving the internet's highest honor.
The IADAS also announced the recipients of special honors, including Issa Rae, named as Webby Video Person of the Year for her groundbreaking work with her production company and use of the internet to showcase breakthrough content from diverse creators, and Hasan Minhaj, recognized for Webby Special Achievement for his work on his Netflix series Patriot Act.
IADAS later revealed that Desus Nice and the Kid Mero will receive a Special Achievement Award for their Internet-born talk show Desus & Mero and that Michael Douglas will accept a Webby Special Achievement Award for his work as Sandy Kominsky in Netflix's The Kominsky Method.
Other honorees include Greta Thunberg's #FridaysForFuture climate change movement (Webby Social Movement of the Year); Tierra Whack for using Instagram videos to create experimental art, laced with high-caliber music and expert art direction, for her debut album Whack World (Webby Artist of the Year); and Emily Weiss for using the internet to create the people-powered direct-to-consumer company Glossier (Webby Entrepreneur of the Year).
The IADAS also named Disney as the Webby Media Company of the Year for earning the most honors across all Webby categories and 32 wins overall, beating out Vice, WarnerMedia and Conde Nast, among other competitors.
Other companies that won multiple Webby Awards include National Geographic (17 honors), Google (14), Vice (11), Conde Nast (11) and HBO (9).
This year's Webby Awards winners and honorees will be recognized May 13 in a ceremony hosted by Jenny Slate at New York's Cipriani Wall Street. Fans can watch highlights, including the show's famous five-word winners' speeches, on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
