ABC Family Renews 'Monica the Medium'

ABC Family's push into unscripted has resulted in its first renewal.

The cable network, which will become Freeform in January, has picked up unscripted series Monica the Medium for a second season.

Produced by Dave Caplan's Trooper Entertainment and Lionsgate Television, the series follows a college student navigating friends, family and relationships as well as the fact that she's a medium and can talk to dead people.

The news comes ahead of Tuesday's season finale.

"Monica has changed lives for the better and given comfort and closure to family members while exploring her unique ability," ABC Family exec vp programming and development Karey Burke said. "She connects as well with our audience as she does with Spirit."

Monica was one of three unscripted series ABC Family president Tom Ascheim picked up in April. The futures of the others — Startup U and Next Step Realty: NYC — has not yet been determined.

The news comes as ABC Family is courting "becomers" — featuring the many "firsts" that its targeted 18-34 demographic audience experiences, including jobs, love and more and is part of Ascheim's plan to double original programming over the next two years.

The cabler's Becoming Us and Job Or No Job recently completed their respective runs and await word on their futures as well.
