Aidy Bryant on Anne McClain Response to 'SNL' Impression: "I'm Helping the Astronauts?"
Aidy Bryant discussed her reaction to hearing back from the astronaut she impersonated on Saturday Night Live when she appeared as a guest on Thursday's episode of Late Night.
After Bryant impersonated Anne McClain during a March "Weekend Update" segment, McClain tweeted, from space, that she was "still laughing" and that Bryant's "uniform looks impeccable."
"It's easily the coolest thing that's ever happened to me," Bryant said. "It means that she watched the sketch in space. My face has been to space."
The SNL star also explained that McClain gave an interview about the impersonation while in space. "She's floating in the air and they're like, 'Did you like it?' And she was like, 'It was the laugh we needed this week,'" she said. "And I was like, 'Are you telling me I'm helping the astronauts?'"
The actress also spoke about Meghan McCain, whom she also impersonates, and who was recently on Meyers' show, an appearance that led Bryant to realize that while they both went to the same high school, they had very different experiences.
Recalling that McCain gave a shout-out to their school on Meyers' show, Bryant said, "For her, it was like a 'Whoop, whoop!' And for me it was the darkest opposite."
"I recently found a self portrait that I drew in class of myself in high school," she said. Bryant added that the painting was "incredibly scary" before Meyers shared it with the audience.
"I think it's fun to know that Meghan McCain, in her mind high school is 'Whoop! Whoop!' and for me, it's this," she said as Meyers displayed the image of Bryant standing behind bars in a jail-like setting, with a red background. "I assume that's sort of blood on the walls."
Bryant added that because the painting was made in 2005, "it was kind of cool to be emo." She continued, "I was living that very hard. Dipping my toe into goth."
