'Alone Together' Canceled at Freeform
Freeform is abandoning Alone Together.
The younger-skewing, Disney-owned cable network has canceled the comedy series after two low-rated seasons.
Produced by Lonely Island trio Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo starred as two overlooked millennial misfits from different backgrounds trying to make their way in the vain and status-obsessed culture of L.A. These two only find salvation in their male/female strictly platonic friendship.
The series was considered an internal favorite at Freeform and earned an early season two renewal ahead of its January premiere. Freeform ran two seasons (20 episodes) this year.
Despite the internal support, the comedy failed to find an audience and wrapped its run in August with a mere 60,000 live same-day viewers. Its two seasons averaged 268,000 viewers with seven days of DVR.
Povitsky, Aflalo and Eben Russell (Girlboss) created the series and served as writers and executive producers. Samberg, Taccone, Schaffer, Becky Sloviter and Hunter Covington also exec produced the series.
The show has now become Freeform's latest cancellation, joining Famous in Love, Shadowhunters, Beyond and Young & Hungry. However, Freeform still has a few big swings in store as part of its 2019 slate, including Pretty Little Liars spinoff The Perfectionists, as well as The Fosters offshoot Good Trouble. The Tom Ascheim and Karey Burke-run network's slate of originals also includes Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish, Marvel's Cloak & Dagger, The Bold Type, Siren and upcoming Kenya Barris entry Besties. The network is also in the pilot stage of a buzzy immigration-themed reboot of Party of Five.
