To count the number of cliffhangers that present themselves in the pilot of FX’s American Horror Story is nearly impossible.

The series, from Glee co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, revolves around Ben (Dylan McDermott) and Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton), a couple who move from Boston to Los Angeles, with their daughter Violet (Taissa Farmiga) following a miscarriage and affair.

However, once they arrive at the estate the family quickly learns that the sweeping abode was priced to sell for a reason – the previous residents both died in the basement of the property.

But the bizarre happenings don’t stop there for the Harmons. Ben treats a patient named Tate (Evan Peters) who in addition to having homicidal thoughts winds up taking a liking to Violet. Adelaide (Katelyn Reed), the mysterious and irksome daughter of the world’s worst next door neighbor Constance (Jessica Lange) likes to invite herself in and say things like, “You’re going to die in there.”

And that’s not to mention Moira the Housekeeper -- the maid who appears as an older woman (Frances Conroy) to both Vivien and Violet but as a young sexual woman (Alexandra Breckenridge) to Ben; the rubber man with eyes for Vivien; and the fanged creature who appears in the basement.

“Everyone is tied together in this strange house that reveals things that wouldn’t otherwise be revealed,” Conroy told The Hollywood Reporter at Monday’s premiere in Hollywood. “It’s a deep, deep story.”
