Animal Planet Renews 'Last Alaskans' for Second Season (Exclusive)

Animal Planet has renewed The Last Alaskans for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. The favored docuseries is set to premiere in 2016.

The Last Alaskans is the network's second-most-watched series in 2015 among total viewers (1.5 million) behind River Monsters, which is its best-performing series ever.

Starting on Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m., Animal Planet will run a marathon of the eight-episode first season, beginning with the first episode and finishing up with the season finale at 8 p.m. In the season ender, titled “The End of Darkness,” sunlight finally returns to the refuge as the remaining families reflect on the winter season and prepare to return to town in temperatures around 50 below.

Animal Planet general manager and executive vp Rick Holzman said: “The Last Alaskans is a genre-busting game changer for Animal Planet. We’re thrilled to continue documenting the lives of these extraordinary families in such a way that not only captivates our audience but also delivers a truly authentic glimpse of life in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.”
