Anna Gunn has booked her next major TV gig.

The former Breaking Bad star has joined Shades of Blue's second season in a recurring role, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Gunn will portray a city councilwoman on the rise and primed for a run at the Mayor's office. She’s the former protégée of Wozniak (Ray Liotta) and used to be part of Harlee's (Jennifer Lopez) dirty crew of cops. Gunn’s character is described as being a chameleon who rose up the ranks of the NYPD to captain before launching a political career fueled by her charisma and the fact that she is as comfortable at a blue-collar bar as she is at the governor’s mansion. As the season progresses, the details of her meteoric rise and her much darker and Machiavellian side eventually surface.

Production on season two begins this week in New York for a midseason return on NBC.

Gunn joins a cast that also includes Drea de Matteo, Dayo Okeniyi, Vincent Laresca, Hampton Fluker, Warren Kole, Sarah Jeffrey and Gino Pesi.

Showrunner Jack Orman executive produces Shades of Blue with Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Ryan Seacrest, Nina Wass and Adi Hasak. The series hails from Universal Television in association with Nuyorican Productions, EGTV, Ryan Seacrest Productions, Adi TV Studios and Jack Orman Productions.

A two-time Emmy winner for her work as Skyler White on Breaking Bad, Gunn most recently toplined Fox's Broadchurch remake Gracepoint. She most recently starred in the ABC single-camera comedy pilot Chunk & Bean, which was not picked up to series. Her other credits include Deadwood and the upcoming Clint Eastwood film Sully. The actress is repped by ICM and MGMT Entertainment.

Shades of Blue was renewed for a 13-episode second-season order back in February.
