Hasan Minhaj is stepping back onto a television news set — for a role on Apple's Emmy-winning The Morning Show.

The former talk show host of Netflix's Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj has booked a recurring role on the Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon-starring drama for season two, which is currently in production. Minhaj will play Eric, who is described as a charismatic and rising star who joins the Morning Show team.

Netflix had canceled Minhaj's Peabody-award winning Patriot Act this past summer, after two years and 39 episodes. Now he joins a group of new faces when the Kerry Ehrin-helmed morning show drama returns, including recently announced new series regulars Greta Lee and Ruairi O’Connor.

The new co-stars join a returning cast led by Aniston and Witherspoon — who play starring anchors Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson, respectively — and that includes Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Bel Powley, Karen Pittman and Desean Terry. Steve Carell, who initially signed a one-year deal with the show, will also be returning in the role of Mitch Kessler, the male anchor who was fired from the morning show after a sexual harassment scandal at the height of the #MeToo movement.

The Morning Show explores the cutthroat world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning. After a first season where Ehrin and her writers room were tasked with rewriting the script to reflect the real-life #MeToo era, season two of the news media show will now be airing in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. The series had already begun filming on season two when productions Hollywood-wide shut down at the height of the virus outbreak back in March. Now that production is underway, a premiere date has yet to be revealed.

The first season had ended on a cliffhanger, with Morning Show anchors Alex (Aniston) and Bradley (Witherspoon) exposing the toxic culture of the fictional network behind the Morning Show and potentially risking their careers to do so. After a season that explored a media culture rife with misogyny and sexual misconduct, the duo took to the air to reveal the shocking levels of complicity, including a cover-up over disgraced anchor Mitch (Carrell) sexually assaulting a staffer. The season ended with the network cutting the show's feed. "It’s like a huge building fell on everybody and it’s about escaping from the wreckage," showrunner Ehrin had told The Hollywood Reporter about season two.

Morning Show is exec produced by Michael Ellenberg through Media Res, which also serves as the studio behind the show; along with Aniston and Kristin Hahn through Echo Films; Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter through Hello Sunshine; and Mimi Leder, who returns to direct several episodes for season two. Ehrin is showrunner and exec producer.

Minhaj is repped by WME, Imprint PR and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
