Bald Miss America Contestant Takes Stage Saturday (Pic)

The contestants in tonight's Miss America pageant manipulate their hair in all kinds of ways but only Miss Delaware will create a 'do from scratch. That's because Kayla Martell is the only competitor in the event who actually needs to wear a wig.

Martell suffers from alopecia areata, a disease that causes hair loss. She's been balding since the age of 13, and told People magazine that she's going all-out for her big night on stage, "I'm still getting used to long hair so we'll style it away from my face with big curls."

Martell's "platform issue" in the contest is the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, according to her Miss America profile.

Martell and 50 big-haired beauties take the stage tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
