Bible Comedy From Johnny Galecki Lands CBS Pilot Pickup

Johnny Galecki

Johnny Galecki arrived at the 2017 SAG Awards red carpet.

CBS is ready to explore living life by the book.

The network on Tuesday handed out a pilot order to comedy Living Biblically, based on the book The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs.

The project centers on a modern-day man who, at a crossroads in his life, decides to live life according to the Bible.

The comedy was developed as a single-camera and will now be shot as a multicamera. It is written by Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls) and executive produced by The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki as part of his overall deal with Big Bang producers Warner Bros. Television. The project landed at CBS in September following a multiple-network bidding war.

Walsh will exec produce alongside Galecki and his Alcide Bava Productions banner. Spencer Medof and Alcide Bava vp Andrew Haas, the latter of whom brought the book to Galecki's company and WBTV, also will exec produce.

This is CBS' seventh comedy pilot order of the season (down one from a year ago) and 15th overall (off from 17 last season). The pilot order comes as CBS and WBTV are in the midst of negotiating new contracts with Galecki and his fellow Big Bang stars to return to TV's No. 1 scripted comedy among the all-important adults 18-49 demographic.

For Galecki, it's his second pilot order and follows Fox's No Place Like Home (also from WBTV). The latter was passed over in 2014.

Living Biblically arrives as broadcast networks have been re-evaluating their programming this pilot season. Dramas and comedies that appeal to the heartland — i.e. parts of Trump America that may have been underserved on the small screen — have been among this season's hottest trends. Of those pickups, military dramas (and comedies) have been hot as well as religious programming. ABC has drama The Gospel of Kevin, which follows a down-on-his-luck guy who is tasked by God with a mission to save the world, and NBC has drama For God and Country, which explores personal sacrifices of the members of the military.
