'The Blacklist' Star Reveals "Answers Coming," Liz and Tom's Romance "Builds to a Head"
Tom (Ryan Eggold) is trying to cut off contact with Red (James Spader) on The Blacklist, but that may be easier said than done.
During last week's episode of the NBC drama, Red was in bed recovering from his gunshot wound when Tom brusquely informed him that their interaction would be over. The end of the episode saw Tom and Liz (Megan Boone) sharing a heart-to-heart, with Liz asking him to come clean on what he actually knows about the mysterious FBI informant.
Eggold tells The Hollywood Reporter that Tom is "at a real crossroads" heading into the final three episodes of season two, as the character tries to move on from his bumpy past. Eggold reveals that Thursday's new episode will involve Tom trying to convince Liz to escape with him to live a "quiet life on a boat," although Liz understandably has reservations.
"His experience with Liz has caught up with him [emotionally] in a way that no other experience has, and he wants to figure out who the hell he is, which is really fun to be playing a character in a moment of soul-searching," Eggold says. "I think there's a real effort from Tom now ... to discover what it is to be quote-unquote normal, to discover what it means to care about someone and what it is to just be a guy instead of always on the make."
Liz and Tom's relationship has been given a fresh start of sorts, and a big moment is on the horizon for the two of them. "There's almost a courtship taking place [between them] as if it were the first time, which is fun given their history," he says. "And then that relationship kind of builds to a head in the finale, for better or for worse."
As for the other complicated relationship in Tom's life, Eggold believes that his character and Red ultimately "have a sort of respect for each other," even if that isn't always abundantly clear. "Tom and Red's relationship is in an interesting place — I'm not sure where it's headed," he admits.
The series has thus far been centered on a number mysteries, with viewers pondering what Red's connection is to Liz or what the fulcrum is, but Eggold promises that a lot of big reveals are soon forthcoming.
"I think what's interesting about where the show is at right now and where we're going, is that I think there's a lot of answers coming right now," he says. "The first season and most of the second season has been about questions. ... I think we're getting to a place where we're answering a lot of that, and it feels like the right time to do so."
The Blacklist airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. Let us know in the comments what you're hoping is next for Tom and Liz.
