'Bridgerton': Watch the First Footage From Shonda Rhimes' First Netflix Drama

'Bridgerton,' a sprawling drama set in Regency-era England, is based on the hugely popular book series, which Rhimes devoured and was desperate to develop. Her longtime producing partner, Betsy Beers, admits that she was initially skeptical. “And I was clearly, totally and absolutely wrong,” Beers says with a laugh.

Welcome to Bridgerton.

Netflix on Monday unspooled the first footage from Bridgerton, the period drama that serves as the first series for the streamer from Grey's Anatomy and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes.

Filmed in London, Bridgerton revolves around Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. The series is based on Julia Quinn's best-selling novels and hails from Grey's and Scandal alum Chris Van Dusen, who serves as showrunner.

"I remember I was almost scaring people, like, 'We have to get these crazy romance novels — they're hot and they're sexy and they're really interesting,'" Rhimes said in a recent Hollywood Reporter cover story.

Julie Andrews (who reteams with Rhimes following The Princess Diaries 2) will voice the role of Lady Whistledown, the unseen gossip writer who narrates the show. Rege-Jean Page — who reunites with Rhimes following his role on ABC's Shondaland legal drama For the People‚ is the male lead and plays Simon Bassett, the Duke who finds himself the target of the town's single ladies.

The eight-episode drama launches Dec. 25 on Netflix.
