'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Renewed Through Season 4 at Netflix
Netflix is showing early faith in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The Riverdale offshoot, initially picked up with a two-season, 20-episode order, has earned 16 more installments at the streaming giant. The renewal, which is being billed as "parts three and four," arrives ahead of the second-season's April 5 return. The 16-episode order — like the show's initial pickup — will be split in half and begin production in 2019.
"Praise Satan! I’m so grateful to my partners at Warner Bros., Netflix, Berlanti Television and Archie Productions for supporting this darker vision of the world’s most famous teen witch," creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said Tuesday in a statement. "And I’m thrilled to be continuing to tell Sabrina's chilling adventures with our incredible cast and crew, led by the unstoppable Kiernan Shipka.”
While Netflix, like other streamers, does not release viewership information, the series has a favorable 80 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 90 percent among critics).
Sabrina was originally developed at The CW before moving to Netflix with the sizable 20-episode order after the younger-skewing broadcaster's Riverdale — also from Aguirre-Sacasa — became a breakout hit for the streaming giant after season one. The series hails from Greg Berlanti and the prolific producer's Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions banner. Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger executive produce alongside Aguirre-Sacasa.
Shipka stars as the teen witch alongside a cast that includes Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez and more. They will be joined by "parts three and four" newcomers Jedidiah Goodacre and Alexis Denisof.
The announcement comes days after Netflix unveiled its holiday-themed Sabrina episode.
Sabrina is the second show to stem from the Archie Comics universe. Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as chief creative officer of Archie Comics, has spoken openly about creating a larger universe. "One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000 to 5,000 characters," he told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Riverdale's debut. "Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats…those are characters who can very easily support their own show. But we [also] have superheroes. So in success, yes, the goal is to expand that way."
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is one of a TV-record 15 scripted series produced by Berlanti, with others currently in the works. Berlanti's Lifetime drama You also recently moved to Netflix as an original series for its second season.
