Chris Meloni Leads All-Star Voice Cast for Fox Animated Comedy 'Botcop' (Exclusive)
Fox has lined up an impressive voice cast for Botcop.
The animated pilot presentation centers on Botcop, a half-man, half-robot cop who in 1985 was considered the cutting-edge of law enforcement. Today, his dial-up Internet and fax machine have become as irrelevant as he is. Fired from the LAPD, Botcop takes a minimum wage job as a guard in a fancy gated community and moves in with his patrol partner — a single dad in need of help, even if it's from an arrogant cyborg who is unaware that his best days are behind him.
Chris Meloni will lead the voice cast as Botcop, marking the actor's return to Fox following short-lived comedy series Surviving Jack. Donald Faison (Scrubs) plays his patrol partner, Wally Dubin, a single dad with two adopted kids, Reuben and Lulu — who are voiced by John Leguizamo and Katy Mixon, respectively. Reuben's goal in life is to leave his mark by becoming a mogul and building his empire. Lulu is the blue-eyed and adorable, seemingly perfect daughter of America's most famous cannibal serial killer couple.
Botcop and Dubin's boss Janice Pinny, who fought four tours in Iraq and now fights to keep her sanity, will be voiced by Orange Is the New Black's Kate Mulgrew.
The pilot presentation will begin production with a table read a week from Friday. Fox will produce the project for series consideration as the network typically works on a different development model for animated fare, which takes longer lead time to create. Bento Box Entertainment (Bob's Burgers) will handle the animation.
Itai Grunfeld and Geoff Barbanell will pen the script and executive produce alongside former Fox head of comedy Tracy Katsky and Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment. Botcop was originally developed as a live-action comedy for the network but after reviewing the script, the network asked for it to be reworked as an animated comedy.
Fox this season attempted to launch a new animated comedy as part of its Sunday block, with Seth MacFarlane's Bordertown fizzling out of the gate. It is considered unlikely to return.
Meloni, who currently stars on WGN America's Underground, is repped by Gersh and Industry Entertainment; Faison (Robot Chicken) is with APA, Primary Wave and Fuller Law; Leguizamo (Ice Age) is with UTA, Silver Lining and Sloane Offer; Mixon (Mike & Molly) is with WME and Principal; and Mulgrew (Red on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black) is with Innovative and Viking.
