'Chrisley Knows Best' Lands Season 5 Extension, Season 6 Pickup at USA Network

Chrisley Knows Best - H 2013
USA Network

The Chrisley family footprint is expanding at USA Network.

The NBCUniversal cable network has renewed Chrisley Knows Best for a sixth season and extended the current fifth season of the half-hour by 18 episodes. Additionally, USA has also given an eight-episode order to a new aftershow titled According to Chrisley.

The aftershow, which kicks off Sept. 5 at 10:30 p.m. following the show's midseason premiere, will see patriarch and star Todd Chrisley tackle tough topics like marriage, parenting, sex and relationships, among others. Every episode will also feature a second member of the Chrisley family, and a celebrity guest. Confirmed guests include Ali Landry, Chris Jericho, Nicole Sullivan, Erika Girardi, Metta World Peace, Jason George, Christina Milian, Heather and Terry Dubrow, and Carmen Electra.

The season five extension brings the current episode total to 26 episodes. Season five will conclude with a two-part Christmas special. The extension and season six pickup comes after a strong outing for the first half of season five, which averaged 3.2 million viewers with seven days of delayed viewing factored in.

Adam Greener, Simon Knight, Jim Sayer, Greg Lipstone and Todd Chrisley exec produce Chrisley Knows Best, which hails from Maverick TV and All3Media America. Annie Kate Pons serves as supervising producer.

Maverick TV and All3Media America will also produce According to Chrisley, with exec producers Greener, Knight, Lipstone, Corin Nelson and Chrisley.

According to Chrisley marks USA Network's second attempt at an aftershow. The channel launched an aftershow for Mr. Robot timed to the season two premiere of the buzzy hacker drama from The Verge, however that project eventually moved online after its linear premiere.

Chrisley had previously hosted a late-night pilot for USA Network back in 2015 that was not picked up to series. "The show is going to be funny but at the same time, addressing issues that people have in their everyday life," he told THR at the time. "It's not going to be your typical 'Let's have every celebrity that's out there come and sit on the sofa with Todd.'"

Despite its continued success, Chrisley Knows Best is somewhat of an outlier at the cable network as it has moved toward darker, edgier fare in recent years with scripted originals like Mr. Robot, Colony, The Sinner and Queen of the South, which was renewed for a third season Thursday. USA's sole other comedy is the half-hour scripted series Playing House, which launched its acclaimed third season in June. However, USA also recently greenlighted a Psych reunion holiday movie set to premiere in December, marking a (brief) return to its blue sky roots.
