Joel and Ethan Coen are the latest big-name auteurs headed to the small screen.

The filmmaking brothers are partnering with Annapurna Television on Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. The duo, who wrote the script based on an original idea, will direct the project.

The pair also will produce the anthology through their Mike Zoss Productions label, with Megan Ellison and Annapurna Television’s president of television Sue Naegle also on board as executive producers.

"We are very excited to be working with Megan and Sue on this project," the Coens said Tuesday in a statement.

Annapurna, for its part, plans to pursue what it is calling “an innovative television and theatrical integrated approach” when it releases the series.

The production company behind such films as Sausage Party, American Hustle and Zero Dark Thirty has recently forayed into television, setting a limited series starring Julia Roberts based on Maria Semple's book Today Will Be Different as one of its first projects.

The Coens are repped by UTA.
