College Sports Drama in the Works at Hulu
Hulu has landed a drama project about an athlete at a crossroads in his life.
The streamer is developing a show called Wild Rabbit from writer Randy McKinnon (Netflix's Chambers). The show comes from Passenger and Fremantle in association with Disney's 20th Television.
Inspired by moments from McKinnon's own life, Wild Rabbit follows a college sports phenom whose life changes after he's assaulted and suffers a career-ending injury a few weeks before draft day. Forced to figure out how to survive and care for his family in his impoverished Miami neighborhood, he's lured into the underworld of performance enhancing drugs. The potential series will also explore perserverance, passion and true partnership.
"Wild Rabbit is a deeply personal story that I have the great pleasure to be partnering with Hulu and 20th to bring to life," said McKinnon. "It was immediately clear that they both share and support my pursuit of creating elevated storytelling for diverse global audience."
McKinnon will executive produce with director Reinaldo Marcus Green (Top Boy), Richard Brown (Hulu's Catch-22) and Stephen Love.
"Randy McKinnon is a force to be reckoned with. He’s written a compelling and beautiful piece that I trust will be around for years to come," said green. "I'm honored to be a part of Wild Rabbit and its unique, fresh, fun, and urgent storytelling. Richard Brown and Stephen 'Dr.' Love are a powerhouse producing team that any director would be lucky to have."
Wild Rabbit joins a list of upcoming and in-development projects at the streamer that also includes The Wagers from Casual creator Zander Lehmann; The Girl From Plainville starring The Great's Elle Fanning; limited series Dopesick, starring Michael Keaton and Peter Sarsgaard; Rodham, based on Curtis Sittenfeld's alt-history novel about Hillary Clinton; and Sally Rooney's Conversation With Friends, among others.
