Comedy Central Extends 'The President Show,' 'Jim Jefferies Show'
Comedy Central used its platform at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour to announce two series extensions as well as a special featuring The Daily Show With Trevor Noah's Hasan Minhaj. Additionally, The Daily Show will head to Chicago for a week in October.
Scoring an additional seven-episode pickup is freshman The President Show, starring and created by Anthony Atamanuik, who "hosts" the late-night show as President Donald J. Trump.
The comedy, produced by Adam Pally's Clone Wolf Productions, Atamanuik, Peter Grosz, Pally, Jason Ross and 3 Arts' Olivia Gerke, Josh Lieberman and Greg Walter, will move to midnight starting Sept. 28, following the newly announced The Opposition With Jordan Klepper as Chris Hardwick's @midnight wraps its run.
"When POTUS himself gets so direct and simplistic it’s hard to understand what he means, it's valuable to have Anthony there to translate the nuances for us," Comedy Central president Kent Alterman said of the series that has scored the channel's best series premiere since Broad City.
Scoring an additional 10-episode order is The Jim Jefferies Show, which like The President Show is also in the midst of its freshman run. The late-night series will continue to air originals through Aug. 15, with new episodes returning Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 10:30 p.m., following the fall launch of Tosh.0. The Jim Jefferies Show is the No. 1 new comedy among men 18-34 on ad-supported cable in primetime. It's also one of Comedy Central's most viewed new series on digital platforms in the past two years.
"I'm very grateful to Comedy Central for making our relationship more official," host Jefferies said. "Like all my relationships, I look forward to a few more months with Comedy Central before it starts crying outside of a bar at 2 a.m. Or spray paints 'liar' on the side of my car."
As Comedy Central continues to firm up its late-night roster, the Viacom-owned cable network has also tapped The Daily Show With Trevor Noah's Minhaj to star in an hourlong sketch comedy special featuring his troupe "Goatface." The quartet consists of Minhaj, Asif Ali (Wrecked), Fahim Anwar and Aristotle Athiras, who use sketch work to satirize topics ranging from sports, music, politics, social issues and more. Ali, Anwar, Athiras and Minhaj will write and exec produce with Athiras directing. Anwar serves as head writer. A premiere date has not yet been determined.
On the Daily Show front, the Noah-hosted series will head to Chicago for a week of shows Oct. 16-19 at the Athenaeum Theatre. It marks the 14th time the series has gone on the road, most recently stopping in Cleveland and Philadelphia for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in 2016.
Elsewhere, Broad City has landed a Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 p.m. premiere date for season four of the comedy, which will feature guest stars including RuPaul, Shania Twain, Steve Buscemi and Sandra Bernhard.
