'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' Channels the Spice Girls With Dystopian Song and Dance

Do the Spice Girls qualify as a genre unto themselves? Probably not, but that hasn't stopped Crazy Ex Girlfriend from treating them as such.

Friday's episode of the CW musical comedy features Rachel Bloom, Vella Lovell and Gabrielle Ruiz (an unexpectedly chummy trio) paying tribute to a special kind of girl power with "Friendtopia." The late-90s send-up includes bad British accents, vaguely Latin beats and a familiar female-friendly mantra — though one that's perhaps a shade darker than "Spice Up Your Life." The cheery tune about friendship to cheer up Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) quickly segues into the particulars of a violent, rosé-fueled government coup. Timely!

"Friendtopia" (above) airs during the CW show's Friday episode, "Who Needs Josh When You Have a Girl Group?".
