Cristela Alonzo Squashes 'View' Rumors: "I Never Considered It as a Job"

Cristela (ABC)

Cast: Cristela Alonzo, Terri Hoyos, Roxana Ortega, Carlos Ponce, Andrew Leeds, Sarah Halford
Team: Cristela Alonzo, Kevin Hench, Marty Adelstein, Shawn Levy, Becky Clements, John Pasquin

The semi-autobiographical comedy centers on Cristela, an American Latina straddling two cultures while not fully belonging to either. In her sixth year of law school and living rent-free with her sister and brother in law, she hopes to find a law firm internship as her mother harasses her about finding a real job and her brother-in-law and sister encourage her to move out.

Cristela Alonzo would like to clear the rumors once and for all: She is not joining The View. And she would really like it if everyone stopped asking her about it.

"I never wanted to do The View," Alonzo says in an upcoming interview with KCRW's The Business. "When it first started coming up that maybe they wanted me on full-time, I was like, 'Oh, no.' "

In a new interview with Kim Masters  posting in full on Friday, June 5 — Alonzo explains why she never considered joining the ABC daytime talk show. Speculation about her future on the series reached a fever pitch in the days after her freshman sitcom, Cristela, was axed in early May. "I got canceled and then they instantly wanted to ask me about The View," says Alonzo. "I'm like, let me grieve. I just had a show canceled."

Alonzo made her first appearance on the daytime chat fest in October to promote her new series, which was also on ABC. Alonzo was well-received by both the fans and the creative team behind the show — something she attributes to her experience as a stand-up — at a time when The View was still struggling to adjust to a new set, a new EP and two new co-hosts (Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace). "I felt very uncomfortable because it was such a weird new medium for me that I was just hoping that I was doing it right," says Alonzo.

She began to make more and more appearances as a guest co-host, but she never saw it as anything more than a "part-time job" at best. "I never considered it as a job. I never thought of it as an opportunity," says Alonzo. "I loved doing Cristela. … My heart and soul was in that show. My heart and soul isn't in The View."

Although Alonzo isn't quite sure what she will do next, whatever it is likely won't be on her old network. "I probably don’t want to jump into another half-hour sitcom with ABC just because I know those people, I know how they work," says Alonzo. "I kind of would like to be open to trying other companies and see how they work."

Kim Masters' full interview with Alonzo will post on Friday, June 5, on KCRW's The Business.
