Dan Harmon Animated Series a Go at Fox
Fox and Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon are heading to ancient Greece.
The network has given a series order to an animated series from Harmon to premiere in 2022. The show is set in mythical ancient Greece and centers on a family of humans, gods and monsters that tries to run one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.
The show stems from a direct broadcast deal Harmon signed with Fox that included a series commitment for an animated show. The show will be wholly owned and financed by Fox Entertainment, with the company's Bento Box Entertainment serving as the animation studio.
"Leave it to Dan Harmon to turn the mythos of early Greek civilization into remarkably sharp commentary on today’s politics, celebrity and pop culture," said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. "This project is an incredibly irreverent family comedy as told by one of the town’s most inventive storytellers. We are proud to be partnered with Dan on this series, which strengthens our hold on the animation space and, as we continue to build Fox Entertainment, marks an important first step for us with our first fully owned scripted property."
Harmon will serve as executive producer of the untitled show, which is set to premiere in 2022. It joins a lineup of animated series at Fox that includes long-running stalwarts The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers, along with Bless the Harts, Duncanville, The Great North and the upcoming Housebroken. The network is also developing an animated X-Files spinoff.
Harmon is among several creators who have signed direct broadcast deals, including Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis, Kyle Killen (Showtime's Halo), Denis Leary and This Is Us executive producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra.
