DC TV Watch: Get to Know 'Arrow' and 'Black Lightning's' Newest Villains
Welcome to The Hollywood Reporter's weekly DC TV Watch, a rundown of all things DC Comics on TV. Every Friday, we round up the major twists, epic fights, new mysteries and anything else that goes down on The CW's Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Black Lightning and Fox's Gotham. While all the DC TV shows are on summer hiatus, THR breaks down all the latest news heading into their returns in the fall.
Meet the newest villain | The CW's latest DC Comics series won't be premiering until midseason, but the main villain has already been cast. Rapper and Strong Arm Steady frontman Marvin "Krondon" Jones III has nabbed the series regular role of villain Tobias Whale for season one of Black Lightning. Tobias Whale, an African-American man with albinism, is the leader of The 100, the gang terrorizing the city that Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) calls home. But in the days before Pierce was Black Lightning, Tobias was a politician, rising up the ranks of local government through corrupt and illegal means until he was brought down by Jefferson's father Alvin. Enraged, Tobias murdered Alvin and was driven underground into exile. It’s here he found a place to rebuild, growing into the violent and methodical leader of The 100. But Black Lightning's recent return has ignited Tobias' desire to emerge from the shadows and face his biggest adversary. "I was excited about Krondon when I saw his audition," executive producer Salim Akil said. "He's going to make a great Tobias. His authentic street sensibility along with an insightful intelligence is perfect for the Tobias character arc. Not to mention his regal physical bearing will be additive to making our show exciting and different."
Another face to fear | Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed during the show's Comic-Con panel that DC Comics character Richard Dragon would debut in season six, and now Kirk Acevedo has landed the role. As first reported by Deadline, the Kingdom and 12 Monkeys alum will recur for the whole season as Ricardo Diaz, one of the identities that Dragon uses in the comics. Described as a hardened ex-con recently released from prison for crimes he didn't commit, Ricardo is bent on taking over Star City's criminal underworld. A master in hand-to-hand combat, honed by years of life on the street, Diaz has yet to meet a foe he can't take down. But he hasn't met the Green Arrow ... yet. In the comics, Dragon started off as a martial arts master for good, but was rewritten as a villain in the New 52 revamp when the real Dragon was killed, and the murderer took on his name.
A new love interest | When Gotham brought Teen Wolf alum Crystal Reed onboard, it was revealed that she would be playing Don Falcone's (John Doman) daughter Sofia Falcone. Brought back to Gotham to help Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) bring down Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), it seems as if a romantic spark will ignite a much more personal relationship between the two as EW reports that she will be playing a potential new love interest for the future police commissioner in Lee's (Morena Baccarin) absence. But knowing how long Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung) lasted as Gordon's fling during Lee's absence last season, Sofia probably isn't going to stick around for long. It's been proven that nothing can keep Gordon and Lee apart for good.
