DC TV Watch: All the Burning Questions That Need Answers This Season
Welcome to The Hollywood Reporter's weekly DC TV Watch, a rundown of all things DC Comics on TV. Every Friday, we round up the major twists, epic fights, new mysteries and anything else that goes down on The CW's Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, and Fox's Gotham and what it all means. Note: Gotham, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow are on hiatus until the new seasons return in the fall. Before all the new seasons are previewed at Comic-Con this weekend, here are all the burning questions left over from the finales.
Is Bruce Wayne moonlighting as Batman? | Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) ended season three looking very much like the caped crusader, wearing all black, trench coat flapping behind him in the wind like a cape, and looking down on Gotham from the ledge of a building after saving a family from getting mugged in much the same way as he lost his own family when he was younger. But is he officially taking on the Batman moniker this season, or is it too soon to call him that?
How will Alfred be affected by his Lazarus Pit resurrection? | After Ra's al Ghul (Alexander Siddig) used his mind control over Bruce to make him kill Alfred (Sean Pertwee), Ra's allowed the fledgling vigilante to use the Lazarus Pit to revive him. If there's anything DC Comics fans know, it's that Lazarus Pit resurrections leave a soul damaged in some way. Will Alfred be the same butler he was before, or is he irrevocably changed from his death?
Is Butch now Solomun Grundy? | Another character who had a near-death experience is Butch (Drew Powell), who managed to survive a gunshot wound to the head. But a nurse reading his health records was overheard saying he changed his name as he lay in a coma in the hospital. His original name? Cyrus Gold, which comic book fans immediately recognized as the pre-death identity of zombie supervillain Solomon Grundy, a character who frequently dies and gets resurrected in Slaughter Swamp. Is this potentially the season four big bad?
How long will it be until Penguin thaws the Riddler? | Former best friends turned enemies Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and the Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) reached an icy impasse in the finale, with Penguin literally freezing the Riddler in a block of ice to display in his new club, the Iceberg Lounge. But how long will the Riddler stay frozen? Who will unfreeze him?
Is Babs becoming Harley Quinn? | Babs (Erin Richards) got electrocuted in the finale, but did she die? Or is that her origin story to become Harley Quinn?
Who is Reign? | How will new villain Reign (Odette Annable) match up to last season's stellar Daxamite royalty Queen Rhea (Teri Hatcher)? How much will she be in line with the comic book source material? How much will the writers subvert what fans are expecting from the Worldkillers?
What's going on with Sanvers? | Sanvers fans may have gotten a treat when Alex (Chyler Leigh) proposed to Maggie (Floriana Lima) in the finale, but the surprise news that Lima would be demoted from series regular to recurring character in season three is not a good omen for their future moving forward. Does this mean their engagement is doomed before it even starts? Would Supergirl really break up the best relationship on the show?
Will Kara find love again? | Now that Kara's (Melissa Benoist) Daxamite boyfriend Mon-El (Chris Wood) had to flee Earth's lead-infused atmosphere, will she ever see him again? Since this marks the second breakup for Kara in as many seasons, will she continue to search for love or will she focus on staying single moving forward?
Will Superman return? | Will Kara's famous cousin Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) return to National City again? Or is three times enough?
When will Barry return? | Why did Barry (Grant Gustin) smile when he said goodbye to Iris and his team as he entered the Speed Force prison? How will Central City fare without the Flash? Will Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) be able to step up to the plate as Kid Flash? Barry will obviously return in season four, but how long will it take, and how will his time in the Speed Force have changed him?
When will the Thinker debut? | Clifford DeVoe, aka the Thinker, is The Flash's first non-speedster big bad. How will he compare to his comic book origins? Will he still be a genius inventor who created technology to make his infamous "thinking cap," which gave him extremely powerful mental powers? When will he make his first appearance on the show?
Who survived the finale explosion? | After Adrian Chase, aka Prometheus (Josh Segarra), killed himself to trigger the explosives he planted all over Lian Yu, did all of Team Arrow get stuck on the island? Did anyone die or get seriously injured in the blast? How will they get back to Oliver (Stephen Amell)?
How will the show use flashbacks moving forward? | As the series has now concluded its island flashback storyline after five seasons, the showrunners have made it clear that they will still be using flashbacks moving forward. What will the flashbacks be about? Will there be flashbacks in every episode?
Is Olicity back on? | If Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) does indeed survive that island explosion, she's got a newly rekindled relationship to look forward to. Or does she? She and Oliver shared a kiss on the island before separating, but does that mean things are back on? Or is there still a conversation to be had about their relationship?
Is Black Siren the season six villain? | Now that Katie Cassidy is a series regular again, does that mean her Earth-2 doppelganger Black Siren is the new season-long big bad? It would be amazing to see a female villain on the series for the long run, but there's also a question of her possible redemption. Could she become a member of Team Arrow?
Legends of Tomorrow
How will the Legends fix time? | After the Legends traveled back to a time they already meddled in, they came in contact with their past selves and essentially "broke time." The Waverider arrived to the "present" for a vacation in Aruba only to find dinosaurs roaming the streets with an entirely new timeline all out of wack. How will they fix time without Rip as their captain? Will new captain Sara (Caity Lotz) know what to do? Will their broken timeline affect any of the other DC TV shows in the Arrow-verse?
How will the new team member join the Legends? | Tala Ashe (American Odyssey, Smash) has been cast as a series regular for season three as Zari Adrianna Tomaz, a Muslim-American hacktivist from the year 2030 with secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source. Will she become her DC Comics alter ego Isis, a normal woman who uses an Egyptian amulet to summon the powers of the goddess Isis? Or will she have a different fate onscreen? How and when will she join up with the Legends team? Will there be any other new additions to the team?
What other historical figures will show up? | After news broke of Billy Zane's casting as P.T. Barnum, viewers now know that Legends will be tackling historical figures in season three. But what other famous faces will show up as the Legends travel through time? What other eras will they visit?
