'Elementary' Gets Expanded Season 6 Order at CBS
Elementary's upcoming sixth season is getting a little bigger.
CBS has handed out an additional eight episodes to the forthcoming sixth season of the veteran procedural starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. That will bring the total episode count for midseason drama from CBS Television Studios to 21. Season six will be the first time Elementary has not run for a full 24-episode order as well as the only time the show has been held for midseason.
While a premiere date has not yet been determined, CBS could opt to slot the series on Sundays at 8 p.m., where it would replace Jeremy Piven vehicle Wisdom of the Crowd. The latter freshman drama will not return for more than its original 13-episode run. The network recently solidified its Monday comedy lineup with full-season orders for sophomore multicams Man With a Plan and Superior Donuts. Freshman dramas SEAL Team and SWAT have also been picked up for full seasons, creating little room on the network's schedule.
The additional order arrives as CBS continues to move toward a year-round programming schedule. Elementary is CBS' lowest-performing returning scripted series and averaged just a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 7.7 million total viewers last season.
The modern spin on Sherlock Holmes aired Sundays at 10 p.m. and often ran outside of primetime due to NFL delays in the fall. The lucrative library deals and international appeal have helped keep the in-house production on the schedule.
In addition to Elementary, CBS has rookie drama Instinct and comedy By the Book awaiting premiere dates.
